View Full Version : Silencer lube thread!

Since we all love lube threads...

I just got my first pistol silencer, and put slip2kewl liberally throughout the thing. After shooting 70rds or so, I noticed the piston felt rough when moving by hand. I did not experience any malfunctions.

So my question is should I use something thicker on the piston? Is grease better for this application, and if so, what kind, and what, if anything should I stay away from? Is white lithium grease bad?

I use mil-comm tw25b for my pistol can o-rings. Seems to hold up a little better then Slip2000 or others. Not as many issues after I switched, but I do still keep an extra o-ring in my range bag. After about 500 rounds I will clean the piston and re-lube.

I've been using fireclean since running suppressed. No issues. Clean up is slightly easier also. YMMV.

Nickel Anti-Seize

Ok, would aluminum anti-sieze, gen purpose grease, or white lithium grease be good?

I don't have any of the other stuff local that I've found.

Going to try high temp wheel bearing grease.

Nickel or another type of high temp anti seize is what you want. If it's good enough for spark plugs, it should be a good starting point.

I'm using permatex 133. A mix of aluminum, copper, and graphite. Good to 1600 degrees F. A light application to my BE Meyers 249 Saker should do the trick. A little goes a LONG way.

Permatex 81343 Anti-Seize Lubricant, 1 oz. Tube https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002UEOLO/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_7425wb3WJEN9W

They also have an 8oz brush cap version. The smaller tube is a lifetime supply. It's good for marine use and also protects against galling.

No commonly available grease will be able to tolerate 600+ degree temps for any meaningful length of time without turning to burnt crud (and acting as glue). There are other excellent anti seize products as well; this just so happened to be in my toolbox. So it got used.

EDIT:

I just ordered an 8oz bottle of this Ford XL-2 Nickel-based anti seize for $6.18 shipped. It's good to 2552 degrees F according to the bottle. Can't beat that price.

This is a high-temp (3000 F) ceramic based grease likely using hexagonal boron. Not sure how that will protect against galling, but the temp rating seems to be in line with other anti-seize solutions:

Being new to the suppressor game, (but not new to replacing spark plugs, O2 sensors, exhaust manifolds, etc.) it's difficult for me to accept that these anti-seize options haven't been widely explored before now.

Roger. I guess I haven't been lurking on the quality ones then, lol.

Update, manufacture uses and recommends white lithium grease. I'll pick some up for now and order some Ni anti seize online.

Thanks to all.

Sounds good. I'm personally suspect of any std grease. The Ford XL-2 stuff is a flat bargain at under $7 shipped.

There is a guy on eBAY that sells Aeroshell in little containers for a couple dollars.

That's only good to around 600 F, maybe lower, if it's the 33MS.

Wouldn't something like copper anti seize work just fine? I just picked up a tube of this. Would these be ok?copper anti seize (http://m.oreillyauto.com/h5/r/oap/site/c/detail/VER0/13109/N0490.oap?ck=Search_N0490_-1_-1&pt=N0490&ppt=C0137)
