Felt like I got a good deal. Nice gun but now what? I have plenty of magazines. He gave me some ammo. So besides shooting it, what should I do? ANY tips, tricks, links to things I should read, anything you can tell me good or bad will be greatly appreciated.

ETA: Was going to get the 6920 but he pushed to the 6940 since "it's better". True? It was only a couple hundred more so I bit.

The 6940 is great the way it is but you can't change the handguard. If that bothers you then you made the wrong choice.

To love the 6940 you have to love it's one piece monolithic upper, I know that I sure do. I love the barrel mounted front flip up sight as well.

I don't care for monolithic uppers so I would've got the 6920, hands down.

Nothing much to do now but shoot it.

Thanks. Seen and read it already. It's five years old and was hoping for some new experiences. It's my first AR and I suffer from buyer's remorse.

I don't modify any of my guns and I'm pleased with how it is.

We'll see how that goes... ;)

In what way?

He didn't elaborate and I didn't ask. He was pushing me towards the SIG but I wanted Colt. I paid cash so the cost was only slightly higher than the 6920. I guess I fell victim to the it costs more so it must be better.

Still the same rifle 5 years later to the best of my knowledge. The only remorse you might have is if you want a different handguard really, which according to your second to last post, doesn't seem to be a concern. It's a fine rifle.

If you don't modify your guns (WTF is wrong with you) then you bought the right one probably.

Don't feel remorse...get out and feel some recoil. The remorse subsides. :)

Bought a 6940 years ago and ended up trading the upper for a 6920 upper. Great rifle and rock solid, but not a platform that would have evolved with me over the years.

To the OP, if you now desire the 6920, they will surely exchange, if the firearm is in the same shape when purchased.

Dont sweat it, OP. You got a great rifle. Do you have plans for a sling, light and possibly an optic?

Don't feel bad OP, you've got a fine rifle that should never fail you. Next step is to go and shoot the shit out of it at the range, get some experience, and then you'll see it's shortcomings for you (if any) and can correct them.

Shoot the daylights out of it. Any wants or needs will reveal themselves through that experience. Enjoy.

To the previous five responses:

I'm ecstatic over the rifle. I also just learned that I can put an 6920 upper too. Awesome. I get buyer's remorse over any big purchase so my feelings are not that I feel the rifle is anything less than stellar. I was searching for REAL issues that the rifle might have. The fact I can't swap out the handguard is a complete non-issue for me. If that's the only thing "wrong" with the rifle, I'm happy. And to repeat, if it is an issue, as I just learned, I'll buy a different upper. Worse things could happen, right?;)

I need ammo!!! Please go to the ammunition forum and give me your advice. The seller gave me a couple boxes but other than that, I have zero 5.56. What should I get for both range fodder and SD/HD ammo?

I have seen multiple reports of the monolithic sbrs having colt chf barrels, accurate? Does the 6940?

As far as ammo, gold dot anything. Palmetto had the 55 grn gold dot for $10 a box.

:sarcastic: Classic

I'd put a GF mod 3 grip and stock, a VCAS, Surefire light and an Aimpoint, then shoot the shit out of it. Being left handed I'd probably ambi it out.

My 6940 is very accurate for the upper... It shoots better than comparable BCMs using the same lower as a control.
I mention this because I swapped a red dot for magnified glass as it seemed to be underutilized with just a 3x magnifier.

They are nice uppers that seem to be accurate, reliable and just a little indosyncratic with the less popular monolithic design. I have noticed Botach was some interesting light and sling mounts specifically for the 6940.

6940's are like precision guided missiles. The accuracy is pretty phenomenal.

I just got a 6944 from a member on this board, and it is one of the nicest uppers I have ever owned, to include my Noveske, Daniel Defense, BCM, LMT, and Colt uppers. The one piece is a work of art, and after can't wait to shoot it

The 6940 is a fantastic platform. I've had one for a few years as my duty rifle, and it really makes the perfect SBR. As a 16" rifle, not being able to swap the handguard is annoying, so I really do recommend going the SBR route.
You made an excellent choice.

Butch

I don't know what you mean by "chf barrels" but the seller made a big deal that the barrel was chrome-lined and good for 10k rounds.

ETA: Then again, I think they all have the same barrels.

Thanks for the kind words. Very happy. I'm not quite as in to it as most of you guys so tricking it out is a low priority for me. 10 years from now if you're looking for a stock 6940 look me up.

No one likes to hear bad things. The purpose of the thread was to identify any known issues I should be aware of before firing or during ownership. From the responses received thus far, it appears I'm good to go. I'm going to strip it down and clean it. Unfortunately, I have somewhere to be today and work all week so it will be a while before I get some real trigger time. I can safely squeeze a couple off on my property before the neighbors peek out their windows. Might do that.

Enjoy your new rifle. If it shoots as good as it's reputed to, you're going to love it. Let us know how it does.

BTW, from your comment in post #30, CHF = Cold Hammer Forged.

You made a smart choice going with a Colt period. That LE6940 will serve you well.

I personally would swap the grip and stock and shoot the hell out of it. Should last you a long time.

I keep seriously toying with the idea of picking up an LE6920 just for nostalgic reasons and to have an inexpensive hard use gun.

What next?

(1) Go shoot it.

(2) Light and sling - think Vickers/BFG, VTAC, Magpul, Sheriff of Baghdad, etc. for slings, Surefire and Elzetta for lights.

(3) Go shoot some more.

(4) Red-dot optic - Aimpoint, EOTech, etc. - you need to look at them all yourself before you make a decision. A variable power optic may be more appropriate for how you want to use it.

(5) Go shoot it even more or take a class

(6) Change stock, grip, etc. as needed.

(7) Go shoot.

You'll never know if the rifle suits you or doesn't until you go and learn to shoot and fight with it. I've learned every lesson about accessories, furniture, optics or what have you by shooting the rifle under stress.

Get some training, buy some ammo, and for god sakes get a sling and a white light.

The 6940 was my first AR-15, and still one of my favorites. I threw a Magpul VFG on mine as well as an MOE stock and pistol grip. The gun handles well and it's amazingly accurate. I recommend a BCM charging handle and a decent optic, either a red dot or a 1-4x scope in a good mount and have at it.
