I received an email today from sgammo.com that they have this ammo.
http://www.sgammo.com/product/223-556mm-ammo/1800-round-crate-556mm-m855-62-grain-green-tip-ammo-made-usa-lake-city-2015-z
Their story is that it's Lake City M855 that was destined to Saudi Arabia, but the contract got cancelled. Their price is $349.50 + shipping for 900rds in a M2A1 ammo can. They say it's not NATO marked because Saudi Arabia is not a NATO member. Anyone have experience with this ammo?

First I've seen of it, but they're a reliable dealer and Lake City 5.56 runs...

Did LC change their boxes recently? What happened to the bandoliers?

Perhaps it was made that way for Saudi Arabia? 25rds per box seems kind of odd. 30rds would be ideal.

The odd thing is that it's "surplus", but the price higher than IMI M855 and about the same as other Federal M855 offerings from others.

Tempting, very .... tempting.

Has the makings for a great "store it away for a rainy day" type ammo to bring into the ammo locker, no?

Had to do it...they are now down one crate.

That 's probably the specifications from the customer. Saudis ask for different packaging than the US mil. It's legit packing though so it's GTG for longterm storage.

Received a can of this today. It was nicely packaged and the M2 ammo can had a wire seal with a tag labeled " US LC". Made a nice hiss when I opened it up. Individual boxes have 25 rounds each. Seems like they could have jammed 4 more boxes into the can for a total of 1000 rounds instead of 900 but perhaps it was just short of space. The empty space was filled with foam spacers. Brass headstamp is labeled 5.56mm LC 15 with no nato cross (probably due to it being destined for a non nato contract). Rounds look like typical M855 with sealed primers (blue sealant on primers, black at the case mouth) with annealed brass.

B52U, do you have some IMI M855 and/or Federal M855 to shoot and compare?

Not at this time. We need Molon to do one of his excellent comparison tests.

YMMV.....

Just a heads up.....I compared the Saudi M855 vs. XM855 (120rd plastic ammo canned stuff ) accuracy wise at 100yds.....

And both shot like poop. There was no meaningful difference in accuracy from a 30rd group of each..... that said, the Saudi had more ( 5 ) towards the center of the group.. but the fliers ( and there were more fliers then any form of a group ) made both group about 4+ MOA.

At no time during the firing did the rifle start to like the Saudi or XM855 ammo... ( IE, the rifle settling into the ammo. )

To be honest, both the M855 and XM855 made such dismal groups, they looked like buckshot groups.... I literally laughed out loud.

As far as I am concerned, there is nothing different , accuracy wise, between the two 855 ammos...... (YMMV)

The same rifle and timeframe I shot a 1.25 MOA 15rd group twice with Fed. 50gr Tipped varmint.

Rifle is a 20" BCM SS410 FF w/ 20 power scope off of a solid bench
Doesn't surprise me. There's nothing magical about "real" m855.
