Rational for civilians right to own an AR-15

I have seen stories written by the gun control people recently about how U.S. American citizens have no need to own an AR-15. Of course that is wrong. I heard a story that makes sense to me. A guy heard a knock on his door and saw four thugs outside with pistols. He walked out with an AR-15 and they scattered. I think that is a good reason for USA American citizens to own an AR-15.

Our president recently released some 300,000 prisoners from our over crowed prisons, supposedly non violent types. Some have already been returned to prison, some committed crimes and are yet to be caught. The world is getting less friendly out there. Self defense is as good a reason as any to own an AR. America has over the past 200 some years adopted the military's weapons for sporting and self defense purposes. There is no reason it should end with the predecessor of the AR rifle.
