I'm putting together a "mix" CD of some songs about nuclear war/Armageddon/the end of the world.

The idea is that the CD builds from generic, fairly mellow songs to a crashing climax.

For example, the first song is David Bowie's "Five Years", which is a slow song where he looks at life and laments that "we've got five years." As the CD builds, lyrically and musically the songs get more and more "urgent" and more specific about the destruction of a nuclear war.

I need a speed metal song for the climax of the CD.

It will be preceded by "Stand or Fall" by the Fixx, and followed by "Electric Funeral" by Black Sabbath and "Goodbye Blue Sky" by Pink Floyd.

Right now I've got Iron Maiden's "2 Minutes to Midnight" in the climax slot but I'm somewhat unsatisfied with that choice. I'd almost like something actually a little faster and more dramatic--something that conveys the feeling of everything being destroyed and life coming to a crashing halt. And, of course, the lyrics have to have something to do with destruction, the end of the world, nuclear war, etc.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Dangerous question with the risk of dangerous answers.

Iron Maiden's These Colors Don't Run and The Longest Day

Sodom made an ENTIRE ALBUM called Nuclear Winter. ETA I'm getting old, Album was PersecutionMania, song was Nuclear Winter

Jag Panzer made that one album Mechanized Warfare. It was bad ass.

Siouxsie Sioux made Cities in Dust which was about Vesuvius but had an apocalyptic feel.

45 Grave's Partytime

Bathory-Destroyer of Worlds

Slayer's World Painted Blood.

Metallica's "Fight Fire With Fire" comes to mind.

As does Megadeth's "Peace Sells, But Who Is Buying."

There's most certainly a Metallica song that fits the bill. "One" is good but might be more fitting for after the climax.

Of course, there's Symphony of Destruction by Megadeth.

"Peace Sells" was the first song to come to my mind. "Symphony of Destruction" is another good one too! Megadeth has serveral good ones for that mix.

ETA: "The Four Horsemen", "Damage Inc." and "Battery" by Metallica would be a good too!

While "2 Minutes to Midnight" is one of my favorite Maiden songs, I think "Be Quick or Be Dead" or "The Evil That Men Do" would be better. Hell, even "Aces High" wouldn't be a bad choice IMHO. "Electric Eye" by Priest would be a good one too.

Add "Blackened" by Metallica to the above good suggestions.

+1 to both "Peace Sells" and "Blackened".
A bit off the radar maybe is "Let the Day Begin" by Samhain. More of a religious armageddon theme but fitting none the less.

ETA: please make a youtube playlist channel, or post the final song list here so we can enjoy your creation.

Holy shit, I thought I was the only one who worked out CDs/playlists like that. I leaned more towards zombie, but that is that, and nuclear war, end of days, zombies, pretty damn close. Named my playlist Omega. Think I started it off with Just like you Imagined by NIN, ended up with some Johnny Cash on there, Five Finger Death Punch, and a shit load more.

Anyway, while not a really into speed metal, if that it the specific genre you seek, I would offer possibly some Five finger Death Punch's songs. Burn it Down comes to mind, as does War is the answer, and Way of the Fist. There are others but don't have my Ipod near at hand.

Now excuse me while I pull up some of the song listed in the thread.

While I would not really call it speed metal, Two Minutes to Midnight was one of the first songs that came to mind. It also lacks the post apocalyptic theme. Probably a good warmup for the final song.

Also, if you are interested in adding another nuclear apocalypse themed song in an earlier slot, check out "When the World is Running Down" by the Police. It is about a lone nuclear war survivor. A pretty good live version can be found on Sting's "Bring on the Night" CD.

Slayer - Raining Blood.

Nothing says apocalypse like Tom Araya screaming about "raining blood from a lacerated sky". It's got a quick tempo and the intro is head-banging heaven.

Whatever song you choose, stop it right in the middle of its crescendo and end it with a nuclear explosion. Nothing says "The End" like a nuclear explosion

What I did was put U2's "Seconds" in because it comes to an abrupt halt. This is followed by the sound effect of a huge explosion with the wind that follows a nuclear blast. Then "2 Minutes to Midnight" plays. I was looking for a song even more dramatic than "2 Minutes to Midnight".

Sounds like an awesome set. But having a song after the explosion suggests survivors. just something to ponder

LOL. I wanted an eclectic mix (which I think I achieved). Not every song is hard rock.

Here is the complete list of songs (in order). I chose this song order because it makes the tension gradually increase to a crash, then a denouement. So if you want to duplicate the CD, know that I made several revisions of this disc and this song order seems to be the best for a gradual buildup of tension.

Everything is on Amazon digital music except the two songs by the Fixx. I actually had to buy the "Ultimate Collection" CD because that's the only way to get the originals.

The CD song list (in order):

1. Marching feet sound effects
2. Five Years (David Bowie)
3. Eve of Destruction (Barry McGuire)
4. The End (The Raveonettes)
5. I'd Love to Change the World (Ten Years After)
6. Bad Moon Rising (Mourning Ritual featuring Peter Dreimanis)
7. Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) (Marvin Gaye)
8. For What It's Worth (Buffalo Springfield)
9. Gimme Shelter (Stone Sour feat. Lzzy Hale or you can use the original Rolling Stones version)
10. London Calling (The Clash)
11. Red Skies (The Fixx)
12. Silent Running (Mike + the Mechanics)
13. Last to Die (Bruce Springsteen)
14. Stand or Fall (The Fixx)
15. Seconds (U2)
16. Explosion sound effect with the sound of the wind that follows an atomic explosion
17. 2 Minutes to Midnight (Iron Maiden)
18. Electric Funeral (Black Sabbath)
19. Goodbye Blue Sky (Pink Floyd)
20. The End (The Doors--I used the edited version from Apocalypse Now soundtrack because it leaves out the Oedipus verse)
21. Hawk screeching sound effect

Can't believe I forgot this one. "Lights Out" UFO would be a good one to add to your list.
