I was watching a YouTube video the other night and in it the person was displaying the contents of a military escape and evasion kit. A part of that kit was a standard waterproof match case but in addition to matches it had a small mirror in the cap, a compass, it had some matches, but it started me to thinking. I’ve had this K&M match case for years and until recently I hadn’t done much with it. I thought, in addition to matches, what else could I add to make a very barebones survival kit similar to what was in the military kit? The contents that I came up with are shown below in the pictures but include:

12 Storm Matches w/ Striker
¾” X 2” mirror
Whistle
Cotton Ball
Compass w/ Cap
8’ of 550 Cord
Carabiner

In the way of components it isn’t very much at all but it could give myself or someone else that uses this kit as a basis for their own a leg up in an unforeseen emergency. I think it was just this week that a mother and daughter were rescued after being lost for five days in New Zealand because they took a wrong turn following a trail. The report is that although they were experience hikers they only planned for a day hike so took some snacks and water but not much else. Their situation was turning pretty dire from what I’ve read but imagine if they’d packed some very basic essentials like in this match case. They’d have a method for starting a fire to stave off hypothermia, two methods of signaling for help, a means of navigation, and cordage that can serve a multitude of other uses. The dimensions of the case are similar to my Streamlight ProTac 1L so it can easily ride in my pocket without any real discomfort. I can also clip the carabiner through a belt loop and it will ensure that it’s always attached to my body. The glow in the dark tape is there in case I have to fish it out of a pack in the dark or set it down it will hopefully be easier to find.

I could probably make some improvements and adjustments but overall I’m happy with my little project. Thinking back on it someone could probably substitute some of the matches for E&E items as well if they were so inclined.
