Turkish military helicopter shot down
Eight high ranking Turkish military personnel killed after Kurdish rebels shot down a helicopter near the Turkey’s border with Iraq, Turkey’s military said Friday.
Clashes broke out with rebels of Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, near the town of Cukurca, in Kurdish Hakkari province, early on Friday, killing six soldiers, a military statement said. Eight other soldiers were wounded.
A military helicopter sent to the area to support the soldiers later was downed by Kurdish forces, killing its two pilots. Turkish military claimed that helicopter crashed near Cukurca district, however, Kurdish forces said that they shot down Turkish helicopter.
Fighting between the PKK and the government forces picked up again in July when a more than two-year old peace process collapsed. Around 400 security force members have died since then, according to Associated Press.
