I need a Sub $300 lightweight single man tent for a multi-day desert backpacking/hunting trip this summer. Subdued colors are a must. Weight will be a real premium as heat related injuries will be a danger and every pound saved means I can carry more water. It needs to be breathable, fully zippable to keep snakes and scorpions out, but have the option for a rain fly since I will also use this during rainy seasons. My biggest issue is I am 6'3 with a 50 inch chest. I have been researching this for a couple months and settled on the Catoma Raider. I got the raider in a couple days ago and set it up. The features appeared perfect for my needs. With an 80 inch floor length I thought it would be long enough. It's not. My head and feet both touch the net walls and my feet poke against the sides when I lay on my back. Im disappointed because otherwise it's a great tent.

I have looked at the Catoma Armadillo, Stealth, Combat 1, EBNS, Snugpak Scorpion 2, Ionishere. The reviews I have watched for the EBNS, Scorpian, and Combat 1 are all reviewed by guys 5"10-5'11 who state they have very little headroom left over. The Snugpak Ionosphere looks like it may be long enough. Any ideas.

Do you live anywhere near an REI store?

One of the things I love about them is that they keep a lot of tent models set up on the sales floor.

I'm 6'5, I use a 2-3 man tent and sleep corner to corner. Mine is from REI also.

Yep, there are plenty of one man tents for big men -- you find them in the section marked "two man tents." There are a number of Big Agnes models that are very light and functional that I have used sheep hunting, that would work great.

I stopped by the local REI a couple weeks ago and they didn't have many tents displayed. The website has many tents to choose from but all of them are either too brightly colored or too heavy.

I'm not sure about the color for your use, but there's the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1 Tent. (https://www.rei.com/product/865388/big-agnes-copper-spur-ul-1-tent) They claim it has a 90" floor length. I'm not a power user, but have been happy with my 3 man tent.

On another topic, what sleeping bag do you use for a similar trip? I am 6'4" and 275 and am struggling to find the best lightweight option without dropping $300.

check out tarptent for high quality, light weight stuff with lots of various options.

I agree on the 2 man tent. Im not even a big guy(5'9" 180) and I have a Hilleburg Nammatj 2 and its BARELY a 2 man. Technically, yes, 2 people can sleep in it, but its really about a 1.5.

Hilleburg has a TON of various models. I ended up with a Hilleburg because I literally could not find a bad review on their tents.

I have a Snugpak Jungle Bag coming any day now. Sounds like we are very close in size. I will let you know how it works.

Tarp Tent, a friend has one, they are nice.

Six Moon Designs, http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/tents/SkyscapeScout.html, I had one, didn't like that you couldn't set it up without opening the whole tent and at the time they didn't sell poles and you had to use walking sticks. It was roomy for what it was.

My current tent when I use one for bugs http://www.mountainhardwear.com/supermegaul-2-OU9669.html I wouldn't use it for a two person tent and I have an average build, makes a great one person tent under 3 pounds

How big an issue is snakes really. I run a tarp and ground cloth unless there are bad mosquitoes

The majority of the time I run a tarp and bivy http://www.mountainlaureldesigns.com/shop/index.php?cPath=22

cuben fiber tarp, poles, stakes, tyvek ground cloth and a back up bivy are well under 2 pounds

The Snupak Jungle Bag arrived yesterday. It has great features but it is too tight for guys our size. I can zip it up all the way but it's so narrow around the chest that it keeps my elbows off the ground. In spite of that I am going to keep it. Since I purchased it for a hot weather bag to be used with a single man tent not being able to zip it all the way is not a huge deal. I won't be able to use the built in bug net over the face but I shouldn't need it inside the tent. I will probably end up using it as a blanket/ponch liner anyway.

Seen a lot of people switching to quilts with a real good insulating mat. Some of the quilts have straps that go under sleeping pad. No experience with this company just using their pic http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/prodigy/ their prices don't seem bad either and they have some XXL sizes

The best bag I have found for big guys is Big Agnes bags. You must use their pad in the bottom of the bag as they do not put insulation in the bottom side of the bag, but that is also what makes them so roomy for their weight. I have an Encampment15 and it is an excellent bag. Their Long/Wide version is HUGE and weighs just under 4#. I'm not very tall, but I am BIG around and it is the first bag I have used that I can get inside of completely.

After some additional research I think I will end up purchasing the Eureka Down Range Solo. It is very similar to the TCOP but a little lighter without the interior blackout layer. At a little over 5 lbs it's a bit heavy but otherwise has all the features I am looking for. It is free standing and has two vestibules to keep my gear out of the weather should I use it during the spring or fall. The price is right too.

I am 6'2" and have a Snugpack Ionoshepere.

In fact I just spent a couple nights in it this last weekend. It is not a huge tent by any stretch, but I think it is quite roomy for a 1 man tent, especially for a guy used to sleeping in USGI Bivy types.

It is lightweight, high quality, and long enough to stick some stuff up front like rolled up jacket and pants for a pillow, handgun, flashlight, and other small incidentals.

I have a Snugpack Junglebag and I don't fit in it well at all. It is definitely built for sub 6'2", 200# folks. If anyone wants a great deal on one, PM me.

Most are 1 less than rated unless the occupants are child size or sleep like corpses/stacked wood.

That being said, sometimes Wiggys stuff is cut on the bigger side so you might ask for some measurements on this:

http://www.wiggys.com/shelters/single-person-bivi-shelter/

They have long/wide sleeping bags that would likely work for you as well.

Cheaper route, USGI modular sleep system is fairly wide and there is a tall version also.

Checkout tarptent.com. Henry shires makes great us sewn ultralight tents. All are within your price range. I own the stratospire 1 and it's excellent. It's a true double walled tent as I need it for the climates I camp. There are other excellent models and are frequently found on AT, PCT etc. I also have a 20 degree enlightened equipment quilt. Love the flexibility..and us made

I have that bag. I'm nowhere near your size, but I pretty much use it like a poncho liner... in conjunction with a poncho liner. It's definitely a warm weather bag, don't use it anywhere approaching ~35F. I mean it'll keep you from dying, probably, but even with the snugpak liner, it's not very warm at all. On the plus side, it's small and light.

The Ionosphere was high on my list but I decided against it due to the high number of stakes required to fully stake it out. Isn't is like 12 or 15? I will be using it in Arizona so I need something free standing with as few stakes as possible.

If you have trees around, cutting your own pegs on site is a better way to go in terms of packed weight and the factcmany tent pegs aren't long enough to get down in to solid ground.

I have never used more than 6 to stake mine out. It comes with a bunch but I never use them all.
