hola all
here is yet another long winded roundabout,m multifaceted quandry from your froend senorlinc (from theakforum.net). im ready to move over to the other darkside and need your help.....


finally got around to shooting an AR today. while i have popped a few rds off a couple of times over the past few months, i actually got to shoot several mags this time. i loved it. very comfortable and easy to manipulate/shoot. i am an AK owner but still fairly clueless in the realm of firearms so i am seeking the help of the great ones guide me thru this...

i want an AR rifle.

Question is....do i do it now OR wait for one of the new incarnations such as the SCAR (read templars AAR from the LAV class and mini review of this) , ACR/masada or HK to make it out to the general public?

if im going to buy one (yes just one) i know i will be spending a ton of bucks between rifle, mags, ammo, optic/goodies and training so are the above rifles worth waiting for ( and hoping they are still legal when they hit the shelves) or do i go out and spend the bucks now on a HQ build? i realise that if i buy something now that will require an entirely different post on what the heck to get though im thinking either noveske (there is a dealer near me) or a call to Grant

also, i never got my cookie when i got my AK, will getting an AR expedite this? many thanks in advance-

kater, i had a feeling you would say that. i do have a couple mags stashed in the basement as well as some ammo but no rifle. i knew i had to join the club eventually even if for some reason i shot my sam7 alot more accurately than the AR today

I would also say load up on mags while they're cheap and plentiful. Everybody is loading up on Lancers and PMAGs and while these are both excellent the good ol' aluminum USGI;s are available for like $9 apiece right now... only a couple of years ago they were like $25 apiece...

Do some research and get a quality built AR, With the November elections coming, and the very real possibilty that Obmba will win, the result will be panic buying and price gouging. Buy a good AR, and a stash of parts now while you have a good selection and availabilty, and don't forget mags/ammo!!

be smart and get what you can now, but skip the aimpoint and flashlights till later. Buy about 20 mags, and two lowers. Then as you get $, build one lower at a time. They won't be banning aimpoints and flashlights anytime soon. as long as you buy the lowers now you will be grandfathered in, unless they pass some miracle legislation.

Here's what I did. It might help to spread the costs over some time. First I bought an LMT upper. ($485) The next month, I got a complete lower. ($335) I just ordered a charging handle & bolt carrier group. ($150) Next it'll be a troy BUIS. Then, more mags etc...

If $$$ is any issue, it might be easier to do it this way (it is for me) rather than to lay out $1,200+ all at one time.

But as everyone is saying START NOW. Do NOT wait. You'll regret it later.

thanks all. originally i was just curious whether to act now or wait out some panicked buyers and overpriced ammo for a new iteration of the AR.

after reading quite a few of rob_s's posts (as well as others) im ready to move forward. many great sources of info on this forum.

ordered 15 mags from AIM this weekend (they were on sale-lancer, pmag, usgi) as well as some on sale brass ammo form them. i will also buy a bulk bin o'wolf (black box or mil classic?) and assume it is good enough for plinkin'.

already emailed grant-hoping he is having a nice holiday weekend but have been antsy to get something done all day! will likely go w the n4 light recce, seems to be quite a bit of value there ... maybe just the upper as i think i can get my hands on a spikes or stag stripped lower and go from there. def see the point of spending more on the actual firearm/mag/ammo (or other possible "ban items") will also get a spare firing pin and whatever other spares i may need. I can always go back for an optic/light later but i may use the "band aid" theory and just buy it all now and take the pain-and perhaps get some better deal out of it. maybe another upper while im feelin sporty- that ADC 11.5" sure does sound nice plus the ringing endorsements help. have emailed arnold re: price , availability and procedure to procure. am sure between he and grant i will be set up shortly.

sold 2 really nice rifles last week and was going to buy a nice bicycle that i have been eyeing (wilier carbon form italy-quite nice) cant imagine them being banned too soon plus its alot less stressful on my body to go to the gunrange!

have an appointment on tuesday to sell some blood plasma however i was rejected from the spermbank---anyone want to buy a kidney? i kid, i kid but i was wise enough to negotiate a deal with my bank...extended the credit card limit AND lowered the APR to 0.9% til 2010...woo hoo free money

Nice breakdown, money well spent. My only suggestion would be to spend some of your mag budget on pmags. I've been very impressed with mine and prefer them to the Lancers or GI's.

looks like there are no complaints out there on the noveske so i will go with that-may do the upper only w LMT lower and BCG. aimpoint, buis (troy?) and get either a emod or sopmod stock. considering the DD 9 omega rail as well. need to check with grant to make sure im not over doing it-i dont mind spending money for quality but i am only using this for the range and training classes

emailed grant 2x as well as a follow up call. word on the street is that he is quite busy. i am hoping (and praying) to hear back from him this week as im getting very antsy to get this done. dont want to do something stupid like piecmealing something together myself. plus i need an t1 and vltor offset mount for my ak (stealing templars nightfighter setup)

also have put in inquiry to arnold and am on his list for a 11.5' upper. they look nice and seem to be testing well.

Would there be a priority of items to buy? I’d first have a weapon. If not then at least a lower receiver. Once you get that, stock up on mags. I’m not sure if you need a complete rifle to be grandfathered in so after mags I’d purchase an upper. After a crap load of ammo I’d probably pick up at least three more lowers. I’m on a budget so I’m hoping I can pick up accessories down the road as finances allows.
