I have a Remington 700 Classic 280 Rem. (my favorite rifle) I'm going to pillar bed the action in the factory stock. It has a 22" sporter type barrel on it.
My question is, should I free float the barrel, or should I leave slight pressure on the very end of the stock where it meets the barrel? I've head some guys do it both ways with regular sporter type barrels, as opposed to free floating most all heavy barrels.
I've also heard of guys leaving just enough room between the stock and barrel to put a small piece of rubber (like from an inter tube) just to see if it likes any type of pressure on the tip stock. If it does, leave the rubber in there, if it doesn't, take it out.
Most of you guys here probably have a lot more experience with this type of stuff then I do, so I'm all ears.
Thanks, NYH1.
