View Full Version : OKAY Surefeed Magazines- Which Coating Option?

Ok, tried to serch for this and dodn;t see anything here, so, your dumb question of the week;

I see two options for these magazines- the usual gray dry film coating, and a black coating they say is some sort of teflon?

Which is the more worthwhile option?

Am I going to have issues with coatings other than the dry film- I remember a thread a while back about the D&H mags, and folks were having issues with (if forget which) certain colors sticking together if they got hot....

I just get the gray. IMO the more you use them the better they look. :)

You can not go wrong going with the Gray.

I just got some of the okay teflon ones. I have some of the dry lube ones. I also have a lot of the d&h teflon mags. I remember someone who said when they got hot in his trunk they stuck together as if the coating melted. I think he had a bad batch because no one else that I remember has reported a problem with the teflon. I never had an issue here in AZ with the teflon finish. Hell if you like I will take a few d&h and okay teflon mags and stick then in my windshield today just to see. I think it's only going to be in the low 100s though.

Ha ha! I would like to see that!

+2 for "the test".
"Only low 100's"
Yeah, that'll do.

That's the plan, but given the ongoing/upcoming "situation" I want info before buying questionable things.

Midday update. Reading about 150 degrees Fahrenheit on the surface of mags through windshield. I will let them set until about 3 or 4 pm today and see what happens. My guess is they will be hot as hell, but that's about it.http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq187/edwardsrc7/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20160702_1245565_rewind_zpsrmqavqmq.jpg

The glass doesn't affect the temp reading?

Good eye! Yes it does. Should have thought of that. Those IR thermometers do funny things with glass and reflective surfaces.

I believe the "sticky" mag issue was related to the D&H mags that were enamel painted, not Teflon coated.

Oh, well I have some but they have aerove spray paint on them though. I did kinda slide em together when I took that last pic. And no adverse affects. Now where did I put those other mags....
Edit. Found em the tops are not painted. Battleship grey mags added

I read that post as well. The original poster was saying not to buy any DH because of the issue.
I don't remember anything about enamel finish.

Ok it's now 16:45, just past the hottest part of the day. Pulled them out of my truck. Recorded surface temp of just over 160 when I pulled them. No sticky mags. No apparent damage. Just mags that were literally to hot to keep hold of, I had to bring them in by my shirt.

Buy em cheap and stack em deep. I show no signs that would indicate the coating on mags has much effect on them when dealing with heat anyways.
Hopefully this helps to debunk teflon or painted mags getting stuck together in the heat. The person who reported it in my opinion was being honest and did have this issue, however I think he had some with faulty coatings. If this really is an issue with teflon or enamel coatings on mags I would surmise the internet would be full of reports and not just one person (that I can remember) who happened to have a bad run. Kind of reminds me of my brother in law, no luck whatsoever, Murphy doesn't just follow this guy around, he makes his living off him.

As I remember the only post I read about the D&H mags having any issues was the coating was slippery when it got wet during a carbine course in the rain, which would not be a mag issue

There was a guy who said he had them in the trunk of his car....they were stuck together or something.

If they can coat cheap cookware with teflon, I would think it wouldn't be cost prohibitive to use a somewhat decent teflon that wouldn't melt in a car.

I think a lot of the "cheap coatings" stories come from guys buying the orange and pink D&H models during the last panic. From what I recall seeing (it's been years) the actual paint was peeling/chipping off like it never adhered to the mag body, and it was mainly for the goofy colored ones (orange, pink, bright colors).

Stank, thanks a ton for going out of the way to run this test.
Much appreciated. :)
