View Full Version : Low profile bag, but no slots of mags

I decided it was time to get a low profile bag for my M4 that does not scream "gun bag." I got a
5.11 "Tactical Covert" bag for a good price. So far, seems well made and designed for the $$.

However, I was surprised to find it has no slots/pockets, for mags! I'll admit, I didn't even check the description of the bag for that as in my (dense) brain, it was a forgone conclusion a bag designed specifically to carry a an AR, would have some slots/pockets/spaces intended to carry some additional mags. This seems an amazing oversight to me by 5.11, but there you have it. I don't want to just drop lose mags into the pockets to bang around.

It has two large pockets in front of the bag, one is large and and empty, the other smaller and has some velcro and molle webbing options. It looks like I will need a dedicated small bag for the mags, I'd say 3-5 mags that will dropped into the larger pocket I figure.

What ye all recommend?

Here's the bag which I paid no where close to retail for:

I went through a recent phase of consolidating my bags and such. I wanted equipment that was modular and could be expanded without a ton of specific-use compartments. I ended up settling on several Hazard 4 products.

They're more spendy than a lot of other options, but I like their layout, molle expandability, and aesthetics.

Some bags that might fit your requirements:

Not exactly discreet, but another rifle bag they offer:

All nice bags, but too late for that. Per OP, I already have the bag. What I'm looking for is a small dedicated mag bag to go into the larger front pocket the bag I now have that lacks dedicated slots for mags.

Had a similar issue on a bag I used for a while, 3m sticky velcro and a couple spare mag pouches was my solution.

5.11 wants to sell you their "Bailout Bag" bag too, hence the lack of pouches and suggestion that the bailout bag fits in the pouch in the description of the carbine bag in their ad.
I've used the shorty version of the carbine bag for my TAVOR and now an AR pistol. I just put three mags in a Condor mag pouch and let them float around with the other gear. Interested in what everyone else does.

I use an Eagle Patrol Bandoleer.

I have two, and like them a lot. I keep a pair of M4 mags in one pocket, a med kit in the other, and a Glock 17 mag and a flashlight in the smaller pockets.

It allows me to grab the rifle from the bag, don the bandoleer, and ditch the main rifle bag if needed in just a few seconds. I figure if I need a rifle, I need it quickly.

Directly stuck to the mags?

Good points and looks like a good product combo the bag I have now. Thanx.

I almost popped on this awhile back- I might go ahead now that you've posted this. Looks very handy.
Where is it made, btw?

Been using this U.S. Peacekeeper bag now for years. Very decent for the price, they are about $45 now, I gave $30 I think.
Holds several AR mags, a few pistol, got lights, a large knife and a couple other things in it. Its a worthwhile piece to own, for a grab bag Will.

No worries, I hope it works for you. They also make a shotgun model, and I have one of those as well.

The two M4 models I have were made here. Some of the newer Eagle stuff is made in the Dominican Republic, I think. But the stuff that is Berry compliant is made onshore. They should be tagged appropriately.

Almost all my Eagle gear is old, and made here.

What kind of AR is it that you want to carry? 16" or 7.5" will give you many different options.

See OP. Bag is purchased. Bag within bag is the issue....it's a standard 6940 and fits the bag well.

I know you already got it and I hate being that guy, but the Sneakybags are really good. I scoffed at $190, but I fit a 10.5" complete SBR in it and 4 AR mags (in a dedicated mag pouch) plus a TQ, chest seal, trauma sheers, izzy bandage, cash, water, food, condoms, HAM radio, and a Larue pocket copy of the Constitution just for fun. It's literally the perfect go bag.

It goes everywhere and no one bats an eye. At 27" It's a bit tall, but not overly ridiculous. I fit an assembled 10.5" in it but you could fit a disassembled 16". If you didn't pay much for your current bag just sell it on the EE and make money. Screw 5.11.

Otherwise, just put the mags in a mag pouch with a velcro cover and leave them in the bag with the rifle. Anything else will be too bulky.

I'm guessing this 10-mag "purse" is probably too big to fit in that pocket, but it's a handy bag that you might be interested in anyway:

http://www.usgruntgear.com/ar10magpubag.html

They make a larger one (which definitely won't fit) that adds a side pouch for 6 pistol mags:

http://www.usgruntgear.com/newar10mapub.html

Another option might be to just put a mag pouch shingle in the pocket (maybe a 6-mag shingle would fit?) to keep them from rattling around in the pocket.
