Can you give me suggestions regarding my first chest rig?

Budget is $100

I'm looking for something that will fit a few AR mags and a few Glock mags. I will not be using a plate carrier and do not see using one in the near future. Main use will be for running some drills with other shooting buddies. Maybe one class per year.

Can a quality chest rig be found for under $100?

Thanks

This would be my recommendation. Based off a very popular Eagle chest rig from back in the day. Not minimalist, but can carry a lot of shit. Only one I'd wear in that price range.

For your stated use and respecting your desired budget as much as practical, I'd recommend Tactical Tailor MAV with pouches of your choice. Note that it's the pouches that are going to cost you. At least with a basic rig like the MAV, you can pick your arrangement and pouch setup. Personally, I only use a chest rig for extra AR magazines. I carry primary AR magazines and pistol magazine on my belt. http://www.tacticaltailor.com/search.aspx?find=%2cmav

Having said that, I do believe that SKD's PIG gear is pretty good stuff. I just have ZERO desire to carry that much stuff.

I will throw out the Condor option to you. I have no experience with their chest rigs but I have a couple of rifle cases from them and they are very reasonable quality in my experience.

Another +1 on the PIG UCR. I prefer running primary rifle and pistol mags off of a belt myself. I don't like having that much gear sticking off my chest

My wife and a few other buddies run these.https://www.blueforcegear.com/ten-speed-m4-chest-rig.html

Slim profile and allows for you to use it for more then one type of magazine. Also it's made in America.

Check out TAG's clearance section - http://www.tacticalassaultgearstore.com/clearance-gear.html?brand=8&dir=asc&order=price&p=8

I counted five variations on a chest rig in the $50-60 range. At least made in America quality and you can dye them if not in your desired camo scheme.

Over time, I have gravitated to the less-is-more chest rigs like HMAC recommended. While I do not have one presently, I do like the all business BFG Ten Speed. My experience is lower profile rigs work much better in vehicles, crawling and climbing. Based on your identified uses, you probably have reasonable expectations.

I bought a Condor sentry vest ($49.95) and a triple M4 mag pouch ($14.95) plus Condor Admin pouch for $11.95!

I agree with the BFG 10 Speed, it is simple and durable, yet it will do everything that you need it to do. It is also under your budget.

BFG is good stuff, but my quibble with the basic ten-speed is two-fold;

1) You may or may not love the ten-speed pouches. They definitely have their pros and cons.
2) The shoulder straps on the BFG rig linked here are, IMO, a bit to widely spaced. Look at the Rackminus vs the Tenspeed- Rack shoulder straps are running about 6 MOLLE columns wide. Ten speed is 8 wide. Having run a few different rigs, including the linked tenspeed, six columns wide seems to be right around the sweet spot for a chest rig. YMMV.

How firm is the budget?

Define a "Few" AR and Glock mags?
Are you opposed to running your pistol mags on the belt line, or are you looking for the chest rig to carry extra to augment the belt line, (or do you not like a belt line at all)?
Do you want to have an IFAK on the chest rig?

I like the BFG option, they do make good kit. I'm seriously considering going to go that route on a low viz rig I'm setting up. I'd like to recommend a chest rig from Beez Combat Systems. I'm going to buy their low viz plate carrier. One of our SME's recommended them to me so you can be assured they are high quality gear.

Here is one of their chest rigs. It runs $79, so you could probably pick up a couple of double pistol mag pouches since the ammo pouches on this kit has PALS webbing. Here's the link for BCS LE Chest Rig (http://www.beezcombatsystems.com/AR-Recon-LE-Chest-Rig-BCS-CR-R-LE.htm). I think they make the outer pouches a little larger so you can actually shove a radio or a pistol in them. I personally am a HUGE fan of mult-use flexibility. Plus should you decide you need more, you can attach more pouches via PALS.

If you want to go low viz and save even a few more bucks, here is a $73 dollar option. Here's the link for AR TAP Tactical Assault Panel (http://www.beezcombatsystems.com/AR-TAP-Tactical-Assault-Panel-BCS-CR-ARTAP.htm)

Again at $73, you can probably throw a couple of pistol pouches on the front.

If you haven't read the "Chest Rigs 101" thread by our SME DocSherm, you really should. Even if you are staying in the sub $100 dollar range. In the thread he really lays out some very important information that can help you make a better informed decision. I couldn't have built my Tactical Tailor heavy rig without his help. You can find the link to that thread here (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?155209-Chest-Rig-101-Introduction-to-the-Art-of-the-Chest-Rig).

Good luck!

Condor Outdoor Modular Chest Set. Love mine. Got it right after they released the revised/improved version of it a few years ago.

Comes in Olive Drab, Black, Tan and Multicam (the only option that will cost you anywhere near $100).

Can find it elsewhere as well.

I use mine for 'fun runs' (homemade courses) out in BLM wasteland.

I run a modified PIG. It works well overall for the price point.

Personally, I'd recommend going with a Voodoo Tactical rifle mag pouch with a custom harness using webbing/triglides/plastic buckles. You won't save much, but the agility of the rig will be worth it if you're not going to war/extended patrols with it.

42 or larger chest size:

40 or under chest size:
https://www.amazon.com/Voodoo-Tactical-Pouch-Bungee-System/dp/B0027QR5DU/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1469320959&sr=8-5&keywords=voodoo+tactical+rifle+mag+pouches

You might pay a bit for the buckles and stuff, but you can have a VERY lightweight rig on your chest that won't weigh you down.

Some people like battle belts, some people like heavy load out chest rigs.

(8 mags is a lot to carry for extended periods. Even assaulters usually carry 4-7. With 28 rounds per mag, that's 224 rounds. You need to move quickly under fire and breathe.)

With 2 pistol and 1 rifle mag on the belt (not battle, standard) + IFAK & holster… a lightweight triple chest rig provides me with 4 rifle mags on a very mobile and agile package.

With the PIG loaded up, it'll carry a lot of rifle mags, 2 pistol mags, flashlight, knife, IFAK, etc. on a much heavier package.

Depends on the mission parameters.

Haley Strategic D3CR, D3CR-Heavy, or D3CR-X (if you can afford the $$). Can be worn separate or attached to a Plate Carrier.

Tactical tailor mini mav with a 2x2 kangaroo pouch. Leaves room for an IFAK and doesn't end up weighing 20 lbs. Mission should drive the gear, no need for radio pouches, etc.

If I may ask, why do you want a chest rig if you are not going to buy plates? If it is just for range drills and a class or two, I would suggest going with a more realistic setup as a Civy. Chest rigs are hot in the summer, push your chest up when shooting prone and are slow to do a mag change out of.

As a fellow Civy, I would suggest something more like this: https://www.blueforcegear.com/high-mount-m4-belt-pouch.html

The above is low vis, will collapse when there is nothing in it, cheap and light.

Over the years, I have attended quite a few carbine classes. With each years passing, I find my self ditching more and more gear (unless the class mandates something). In the last LE/MIL CQB class, I was pulling mags out of back pockets. Why? I am a civy and if I ever need to use an AR to save my life, I will have a couple mags shoved into whatever and that will be it.

/\ much truth. After a few classes, I put MOLLE shorty cases on my old school leather belt offset from centerline. I can reload faster from the belt than any chest rig. The only place where the times are similar is in the prone and I have to roll left or right to access the waistline pouches. I do have a minimalist chest rig to wear over a slick plate carrier, but that is indeed as a supplemental mag storage mostly.

All that said, I thought ALICE gear was the shit 20 some years ago, so maybe I am just old.... But the muscle memory does not die.

i agree for civie buy stuff to put on a web belt.

for gray man add attach the holders to your pants belt and buy a good set of suspenders or even an h style harness like from hsgi.

you can always store pouch in they grey rifle bag or a shoulder bag.
worst case use a shoulder bag to hold that gear then use the bag as a dump pouh and ancillary gear holder

hope this makes sense

Disclaimer, I am a complete newb at this, but...I found a TT mav 2 piece for $55 and two double mag pouches for $20 each, all from amazon last week (I bought all the mag pouches at that price). You would still need a pistol mag pouch which would break your stated budget. I also found a x-harness for $20 plus $5 shipping (getting a fair bit over your budget now). The colors don't completely match, but I'm a civy looking for SHTF gear, so I don't care. I am a buy once, cry once type of guy, and chose to pay the extra for the TT over the BFG. If your bugdet is fixed in stone, go with the BFG ten speed chest rig and a double pistol mag pouch of some brand and you are good to go.

Eagle Industries used to have the SKD version, it holds 8x 5.56 mags, or 4x 7.62 mags. Pricing under $90. Although SKD now their own similar version.

I have an older SKD, purchased about 7 years ago and it's great. It's got the little map pocket inside, enough room for 8 AR mags and 4 pistol mags.

I carry four rifle mags, two pistol mags, a multi tool and a flash light. It's light, comfortsble, and cool in the summer compared to other options.

I know everyone has a budget but I wouldn't want to necessarily limit myself in that regards. Buy once, cry once. Buy yourself something decent and customizable to adapt to your needs/desires as they change over time. I really like my Haley Strategic D3CR but it's not customizable so I recently placed an order for an MVT 556 Responder Rig by Max Velocity Tactical. It holds four 5.56 mags and I can add any additional admin. or pistol mag pouches that I want.
