$400 for an M&P 15 Non-sport edition. Could have been a MOE at one point, not really sure.

What I know about it: BCG has some marring, nothing too bad, has 4k+ rounds through it, i'll be the 3rd owner.

The price that I got it for was too good to say no.

Tell me how bad I did.

I guess it would depend on what your purpose for this is.
If it's going to be a truck gun or a loaner or something to just piddle with, you did alright. I might have bought it.
I would likely consider it an okay deal and throw it behind the backseat of my truck and be happy that it is there. Take it out and bang, bang the tar out of it once in a while and throw it back behind the seat again.
They aren't the best, but they will likely take a lot of abuse and still work well for you.

Leave it soak in some mineral spirits for a week?

Slap a carry handle on it after that, and - VOILA - truck gun!

For the price you paid, not bad.

I would put a new trigger guard on the rifle before doing much more with it.

Id buy that for 400

If it's got 4k on it, I'd inspect the bolt, but I'm sure it will serve you well. Great price for a good beater rifle, assuming it's been reliable for the other guys. If not, I'm sure members here can trouble shoot with you to get it running 100%

You got a deal on it... I'd hang onto it until election time and flip it for triple/quadruple your money.

LOL! Yeah, I predict lots of mineral spirits in the OP's future! :)

Paint it the same "Grape" color as your carpet, the upside would be you'll never lose it in the tall grass!

I'd say you did well for a S&W. It would be a lot different if it was an Oly or a DPosM.
The first thing I'd do is clean the shit out of it then inspect it very carefully, especially focusing on the bbl/chamber along with the bolt head and face around the firing pin hole, so basically the whole BCG. A new firing pin may also be a good idea.

Well secondly you really need to go shoot it first then just like I mentioned do a very detailed and thorough inspection before firing is a must before doing anything to it to see how she runs..
But hey with over 4K rounds pumped thru her I think she deserves some new springs throughout staring with the extractor spring and a nice fresh 'O'-ring.
Oh yeah, It might look a whole lot better/cooler too if you'd spray paint a nice camo pattern maybe in a O.D.G.color over the tan paint? I would!
Good luck & enjoy your new toy!

But seriously, I'd get rid of the BAD lever - they've prevented my bolt from locking back on empty more often than not, and other times have just gotten in the way (gloved shooting, etc). If it doesn't turn out all that great, it's a $400 AR. Maintenance is easy and replacement parts are easy to find.

Dump the BAD lever, get a spare bolt and re-spray it. For around $480 invested, you'll have a great loaner/spare/truck gun. Hard to beat that!

Yeah. My friend said he wants the bad lever. I have no use for it.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty stoked.

You know, I likely would have bought that gun quickly in a private transaction now that the world has turned a bit more.
I used to have a Sergeant Major in the Eighties who wore some 70's era disco three piece suits that same color, well, that or a blinding Orange. He would pour Coke in on top of Glenlivet too, so..

I'm new here, but not new to AR's and it looks like a good deal to me. I would have done the same.

In fact, I recently picked up a similar well-worn AR that will be a decent shooter for my kids to learn on and beat up in the process. It's a supposed private contractor rifle, but the bore and bolt look good and the price was right.

For the price its a good buy, I would personally just do $20 worth of springs and shoot it till it won't.
