View Full Version : BCG
I own a few AR'15's. I have never bought a BCG for them due to the current BCG being very good. But, the Ruger AR-556 I just recently bought has an un-shrouded BC. I am not to fond of this. Can anyone out there recommend an aftermarket BCG in the $80-$100 range that is shrouded? If there is any in particular that might cost a little more, I'm open to options.

Get a Toolcraft when they come back in stock:
http://www.wcarmory.com/toolcraft-bcg-223-5-56-bolt-carrier-group-black-c-158-mpi-complete.htm
The value is unbeatable.
Most BCGs sold separately are the auto style now with a full shroud and normal shape/dimensions. AIM and Surplus Ammo, among others, have their house brands in the $80 range regularly. I don't know who makes them or what the quality will be.
I'm sure people will chime in with BCM/DD/LMT etc., and those are all solid high quality, but for much more cost. I can't see the point spending $180 to upgrade a part on a $650 rifle.

AIM surplus has BCM carrier groups for $159 delivered - http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XBCMBCG&name=BRAVO+COMPANY+MFR.+BCM%C2%AE+.223%2f5.56%2f.300+BLACKOUT+Bolt+Carrier+Group&groupid=2104
I would be wary of cheaper BCG's as they may very well be a downgrade from the one that came with your rifle even though it may not be the profile you want.

I have only used BCM or DDs for as long as I can remember at this point.
If I were buying new now and cost was a factor I'd go to Centurion if I knew I was going to have to rely on it.
https://www.centurionarms.com/product-p/bcg-c4.htm (for me it is $140 to the door)
There are few other than the Toolcraft that I'd consider based on volume of feedback (but would run thoroughly before I relied on it):
ADM Milspec: https://www.americandefensemanufacturing.com/view/product/884/
PSA Premium: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-5-56-premium-hpt-mpi-full-auto-bolt-carrier-group-no-logo-39339.html
Actually, the PSAs are $89.99 today and at that price I might grab one to see for myself.

It would look like the SOLGW and the BCM BCG's are made by the same manufacturer. GunsNGear's review showed a detailed look at the BCG and it looks identical to the BCM. Will have to pick one up for 143ish with discount delivered.
if you re-use your bolt and pins, you could buy just a carrier.
Colt carriers go for around $90 on gunbroker, sometimes $65 when a certain seller has them.

I have the same rifle. The gas key wasn't staked on my bcg. I contacted Ruger, and they had me send them some pictures. I ended up putting a BCM bcg in, and I'm going to end up leaving it in there. If Ruger ever ends up staking the one that came with the rifle, I guess it's just another extra I'll have one hand.

BCM only sells one BCG

As I mentioned in my earlier post, AIM has them for 159 delivered.

The bolt is generally considered to be the consumable part in the BCG. That is not to say that a gas key or carrier body cant break, just that they don't nearly as often as bolts.
I feel that unless you are building new rifles it would be more cost effective to have a couple of complete bolts, and several each of the bolt parts - extractor, extractor spring, etc. as well as a couple of cam pins.
Not many of us operate in a field environment where we carry an extra BCG in our gear for quick repair on the battlefield.

These guys stuff looks awesome. What's the m4c opinion?

I was wondering same. Never heard of them, but the specs sound as good as anything out there (minus the track record since we don't know who actually makes them and who else 'they' make them for). Hopefully IG or someone else in the know will chime in.
Take a look at the appropriately title thread for Sons of Liberty Gun Works.

I agree with the above.
I did ASSume that since the op just purchased the rifle, there was a chance those parts were new. My suggestion of replacing just the carrier, was to replace only what he didn't like, within target budget.
colt carrier only is $75, not $65 as I originally stated.

SOLGW is a good group of guys and they are passionate about making good stuff. I teach my classes down there several times a year. Their stuff is legit and definitely surpass companies like Windham, Bushmaster, DPMS, Olympic, Spike's, etc..
They have also helped raise money to donate rifles to LE and they have fixed guys guns who came in to the shop with crap that wouldn't work.
Awesome! Thank you.

Is this Colt carrier shrouded or un-shrouded?

Shrouded. Those guys are GTG. I just ordered 2xColt bolt carriers, 2xFN bolts, 2xstripped uppers and 1xColt Socom barrel. They ship very fast.
If you're willing to purchase a new BCG to replace one with poor staking, be prepared to pay more than $80-$100 for known quality. No such thing as a free lunch.

I am upgrading to a shrouded BCG, whereas the Ruger AR-556 is un-shrouded.
Make sure that before you buy that whatever BCG you settle on will work in your gun. Ruger (and Sig) like to use lots of proprietary parts in their guns.

The AR-556 is compatible with GI-type bolt carrier groups.
Toolcraft BCGs are less than $100 shipped and I prefer them to my BCM bcgs. Toolcraft is a .gov supplier as well...cage code and all.

Just honestly curious what 'prefer' means in this context. Do they do something better or is a 'same function for lower cost' sort of scenario?

No difference in quality to me in finish and use...especially for the $60+ price difference. Very common for mil to use Toolcraft.

A $60 price difference is enough to convince me to buy a "same function for lower cost" BCG! Hell, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!
Probably about the only difference you'll see is a MIM gas key on some of the less expensive ones.

Are you finding them in stock anyplace? I can't.
Thanks!

I get them from wcarmory. They come in stock every couple months or so. They used to have an email notification feature but seemed to have removed it recently.
I'll add a few to stay away from. AIMsurplus NIB coating is garbage and Fail Zero has a great finish on an all too often poorly done bcg. Mine might as well not be staked at all, the extractor spring just loosely sits in place, and the cotter pin is extremely tight.
