Trying to keep a new build relatively lightweight and want to stick a variable scope on it. I don't need illumination on this one. Plan to use an Aero Precision 1" scope mount to help keep weight low. The main features I'm looking for is a scope with true 1x, and nice glass/durable as possible considering the price point. This will be my first AR with a variable on it, going for a general purpose build that can take some abuse. Found a few candidates...

Weaver V3 http://swfa.com/Weaver-1-3x20-Classic-V-Rifle-Scope-P2864.aspx
This is the lowest magnification of the bunch at 1-3x and the least expensive. Is slightly heavier than the others according to specs. They seem to have a good reputation from what I have come across online.

Leupold VX-Hog https://www.amazon.com/Leupold-114933-VX-HOG-Rifle-Scope/dp/B006YU7RMO
Seems comparable to the other Leupolds I'm considering. Has the busiest reticle of the bunch. Not sure if It's a VX-1 or a VX-2.

Leupold VX-1 Shotgun Scope http://www.midwayusa.com/product/812958/leupold-vx-1-shotgun-scope-1-4x-20mm-turkey-plex-reticle-matte
It's called a shotgun scope but I don't see why it couldn't work fine on an AR unless I'm missing something. Is it somehow inferior to the VX-2 lines of scopes?

Leupold VX-2 https://www.amazon.com/Leupold-110793-VX-2-Rifle-Scope/dp/B006PH5SUY
The most expensive of the four scopes. Not sure how It's better than A VX-1 but if its better glass and more durable I will shell out the extra coin for it.

Thanks for any help fellas.

The pig plex is just stupid. I wonder what idiot thought that was a good idea. I say get the shotgun version. I have the VX R with the firedot circle and love it. The circle helps me when shooting fast up close. I would guess all the Leupold glass on those choices is similar and better than the Weaver. Good luck with your choice. David

It's just about impossible to find a good variable scope under 10 Oz. The closest you'll get is a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 1.5-4x20, it's about 9.5 Oz but it's not a true one power. The VXR Patrol is another great option at 11.5 Oz, but again not true one power.

About the best you'll get with a true one power, is the Trijicon Accupoint at 14.5 Oz, the Burris Mtac at 14.5 Oz, the Leupold VX6 at 14.5 Oz, or the Vortex Viper capped version at 14.5 Oz.

With that being said, I've found that a variable scope doesn't seem to "weigh down" the rifle as much as one might think because the weight is at the rear of the gun. The rifle feels heavy when you pick it up, but once shouldered, I don't feel much difference between my variable and my Aimpoint.

Well after much research I've decided on the Weaver V3. The Leupolds I was looking at don't seem to be as close to 1x as the V3. Nothing else seems to be as close to 1x as the V3 without going up a lot in weight and cost. If I were to jump up in weight and cost for illumination and a bit more magnification I would probably go with an MTAC from Burris. I forgot to mention in the OP that capped turrets are a must for me.
