How would you rate this pinning and welding on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being gunsmithing perfection, and 1 being "you might as well throw the whole thing in the trash"?
This is my first non-16" AR and I've only handled a few short barrels with pinned flash hiders, and never really paid much attention to the attachment.
Thanks for your input.

Not sue why he milled the flat around the blind pin, is that necessary? I don't think so. Had he just drilled a hole and pinned it, it would have been easier to dress it up enough to conceal the blind pin altogether. I'm no gunsmith, but I've seen better blind pin jobs.

But it's usable, it's not too terrible.

For cosmetics I give it a 3.3 That looks horrible when contrasted with one I had done a month ago - which was basically a bead with no crater.

Yeah it looks like crap, but it will function fine.

If it was cheap you got what you paid for.

There is mine and I did it myself. Also the first time I built my own rifle.

That looks pretty bad. I had ADCO do one for me that looked like a perfect rounded bead with no disruption of the metal around it. It was almost like a perfectly round metal sticker.

Here's one I had done. How would you guys rate this one?

I'd be fine with any of the pictures in this thread. I'm not sure what the fascination is with the cosmetics of the weld.

More importantly, was the hole drilled to an appropriate depth? Is the muzzle device torqued properly? What material was used for the pin?

It's not cosmetic, there is a chunk of the flash hider missing. It won't affect function, but it's damaged.

Also if paying someone to do something, I expect them to do it correctly. That doesn't look like a proper weld (missing material), but I'm not a welder, so...

How does it shoot?

Living behind enemy lines, and having to pin/weld everything despite the barrel length I stopped caring about aesthetics quite a while ago. :(

If it doesn't affect function, I'd call it cosmetic...even though it looks like some of the corner of the FH got melted and/or the FH was filed. The real thing to worry about can't be verified by visual inspection.

The real issue here is expectation.
If the OP asked the gunsmith to make a beautiful, nearly invisible weld and he received this, then he should not be happy. If the OP didn't discuss his expectations and then received this then he should be OK with it in my opinion.

If I was OCD on how such a job would look, then I would specifically discuss it with my gunsmith or machinist prior handing the rifle over. Likewise, if I was a gunsmith I would have a short discussion about customer expectations vs what I had to offer and pricing.

Attention to detail is a sign of pride in the work you're doing. Someone going the extra mile to ensure proper alignment, torque on the device, depth of the hole, and proper material for the weld is going to be more likely to finish the job with an aesthetically pleasing weld. If you believe someone completing shoddy looking work is going to do everything else to spec or better, that's on you.
