I've got an old 870 and have two barrel for it. One 18.5" for HD, and another (forget the length) for hunting. Would like to get some sights installed in place of the bead on the 18.5 barrel, but do not want a rear sight that has to mount to the receiver. Any suggestion on the sights or a smith to install them?

Thanks

Just purchase a lightly used "new to you" factory 870 police barrel with rifle sights... they run around $100... Or you can get a new one for a little more...

XS makes a sight that "fits" over the bead on an 870. I dont know how well they work but for $60 its worth a try and i think this is what im going to put on my vang barrel or one that claps on the barrel.

heres the like

I've considered it, but it still leaves me with just a front sight

Have your reciever taped for a rail, LPA has a rail mounted sight that will work with a rifled sight on the 18.5 barrel, or run the rail and and Eotech or Aimpoint. So when you want to use it for hunting you can take the optic off or use it for hunting as well.

I think for what you want to do the rail would be the best bet.

Who sells actual new Remington Police barrels? I've had a little difficulty finding a Remington 19" parkerized police barrel (not an Express model).

Thanks

Give Vang Comp Systems a try. They will at least be able to point you in the right direction.

ADH, I don't think you're going to find a bright blue rifle-sighted barrel, but I could be wrong on that. Why not go the other way? Have your receiver and your hunting barrel rough bead blasted and blued, then all your kit will match. Just your parkerized RS barrel will look a little different. But if you have your receiver and your hunting barrel parkerized, the parkerized hunting barrel may look a little odd to some. But the birds won't care.

Way to go, Buck. I had not seen a bright blue RS barrel.

Long ago I had an 870 I'd traded for with an 18 1/2 inch barrel. Like you I wanted rifle sights on it and took it to a local gunsmith, along with a set of sights from a Remington 700 I had setting around. He silver soldered them onto the barrel and touched up the bluing for next to nothing. Believe it or not it shot pretty well and looked good as well. They held up well and were still on the gun when I traded it off.

It's something to think about.
