I think 18 is the general consensus.

Pretty sure 21 as for I think for most states you need a permit to purchase for the lower. Although you can own one younger than that as it can be gifted. (this was off the top of my head so I would double check to be 100% sure)

I thought 18 for rifles and shotguns, and 21 for handguns. Could be wrong though.

Why don't you check online the specific laws for your specific state.

federal law is 18 for long guns, 21 for handguns

some states may require a person to be older for long guns, but Texas is not one of them

edit: the above refers to purchase from an ffl holder

Whole lotta' NOPE in free states. At age 18 you want it, you buy it. We don't need no stinkin' permits.

You don't need a "permit" to buy anything non-nfa in my state.

I believe it's 18 for long guns.

Universally 18 except in some Communist states. I think it is kind of dumb though.

An 18 y/o can buy a Barrett or an AR 308 no problem but not a .22 pistol.

I was 19 and had a STG 58 and a cheapo Mossberg but waited until 21 to get a used Gen 2 Glock 17.

You can buy cigarettes at 18 but no beer until 21.

Kinda stupid overall. Either at age of majority you are a full citizen with full rights or you aren't.

I don't think there is a Federal age law for personal transfer. So you mention multiple States. So assume Federal. Private transfer. I don't think there is a law of age.

FFL transfer may be a different story. SteyrAUG probably knows .. or BigWaylon... they seem to have read all the important pages.

I'm not too familiar with other state laws regarding purchases, but generally you have to be 18 to buy an long gun and 21 to buy a handgun. No one out here in Nevada will sell you a stripped or complete lower receiver unless you are 21. From my understanding, a lower can be build into a pistol so no FFL will sell anyone a lower under 21.

I know this might be shocking to some, but 18 yrs is the rifle buyin' age for commie Calif.

General rule of thumb- Read your own states' laws.

General guideline.

1. Handguns from an FFL- 21 years old.

2. Long guns from an FFL- 18 years old.

3. Handguns/Long guns from a private party (where allowed)- 18 years old.

4. Stripped lower- 21 years old since it can be built into a rifle/pistol.
