Interesting modification. From a non-machine gunner, when you shave off that much weight from a proven design, isn't durability affected to some extent?

"The 20-pound gun cuts 5 pounds from its traditional weight by losing extra steel that was part of its riveted box receiver. The lightweight receiver is built from forgings that are then welded together. "

Carrying the 240 did separate the men from the boys but to those of us that did it we thought of it as a badge of honor.

The weight savings are a good idea as long as strength is retained or improved upon. The only hard part to clean IMO was the face of the piston so I don't know how necessary the interior finish was.

Provided that the M240L maintains the durability and reliability of the standard M240 then it is definitely at much needed improvement. That said, can't really get too excited about the M240L considering that the Russians have had a 20LB, 7.62 belt fed for what 50 years now with the PK series guns.

I was a WSL with both my gun teams having the 240L. Was an AG when we made the swap in my old unit in 2011 from the B to the L.

No problems whatsoever with the Lima. Maintain the appropriate rates of fire with proper barrel change intervals and you will see no difference in capability.

Upon second look:

Is this not just the 240L, but another lightweight variant?

Love me since M240B. But then again I never had to hump one around on foothe.

I thought the M240L was already down around 20 pounds with its titanium receiver.

If I remember correctly, I want to say it's 22.3lbs for the L vs 27.6lbs for the B. The difference is actually pretty substantial when carried, and I was damn glad we switched when I was an AG.
