Looking for input on personal protection spray. I have zero knowledge with regard to Mace or Pepper type sprays, their distances or even effectiveness. My daughter reached out to me last night wanting me to get her something she could carry while walking campus. Seems the CLOWNS are showing up after dark.

Thoughts on methods of carry would also be of help. Cant imagine having something at the bottom of the book bag is that useful when needed.

I have a LOT of experience with OC spray. I have used it multiple times a week for the last 12 years in my job.

The Sabre red MK-9 OC fog would most likely be the best BUT the small cans have a reach of about 3-5 feet. The larger cans have a reach of about 10 feet and put out much more chemical agent.

Chemical agents are not always effective though and I would be careful how I used them. When you spray someone you have to move as well or you will get punched in the face. I have sprayed individuals with over 40 ounces and have them laugh at me.

The stuff you can buy at stores is also junk and I wouldn't trust it at all.

Are you against her getting a CCW? Chemical agents are also considered a concealed weapon and you can be charged with assault when using them so you have to be careful. If you have reason to use a chemical agent you also have a reason to use a firearm IMO.

Get her a Kimber Pepper Blaster (http://www.kimberamerica.com/pepper-blaster). It's less impacted by wind and has a better chance of accurately hitting her attacker in the face.
If you have the spare change, the JPX Jet Protector (http://www.smartstun.com/Piexon-JPX-Jet-Protector-Frame-With-Laser_p_228.html) works on the same principal, but is rapidly reloadable. Both increase accuracy and range over a traditional can.
As to OC(Oleorisin Capsicum), look for the SHU(Schoville Heat Units). It's a rating of the heat; the higher the number, the better. Right now, I believe Fox Labs (http://www.foxlabs.com/) has the highest SHU of the chemical agents commonly available for general civilian use.
Check local laws to see if there is a size restriction, I live in Jersey, and like everything else, there is a restriction on the quantity of OC that a civilian can carry at one time.

That Kimber unit is something to look at. I have never seen anything like that. I also should admit that my experience is not with average criminals and a stream type OC could work on a single attacker. It comes out like edge shaving cream and has a decent range.

I should probably mention I'm a sworn LEO, serving in the capacity of State Corrections Lieutenant, and have been using OC in one form or another for a little better then twenty-three years.

Have you used the Fox Labs product?

Congrats on 23 years of state service. I'm only coming up on 13 and hold a Lieutenant position as well.

We use the Sabre defense products.

I would recommend replacing your OC on a regular basis. I save my old cans for use as raccoon/skunk deterrent. An occasional spray under my deck keeps the critters away. When I use the old cans the stream is usually very weak.

Also, rememerer to wash your hands after spraying OC. Then wash them again. If you dont do this before taking a leak, you will have a very memorable experience. (Dont ask me how I know this)

Great info so far guys and thanks. CCW is not an option at age 20 plus to be honest Im just not ready ready to take her there yet. Just too many variables on campus with a firearm at this point for her.

Our agency uses ALS products in a fog or stream depending on use, we used to use DefTec. The cone spray dissipates too quickly and can return to the user. SabreRed offers some good products as well. I don't know how small the foam spray cans are, but they could be an option. I have sucked down more pepper spray than anything else, and depending on where it hits me, it can put me out for a minute or for hours. My skin was on fire the rest of the day even after baby shampoo and milk. Pepper Gel looks nasty. I say SabreRed ftw.

Best Regards
