Hey gang- am in the market for a Mossberg 500/590/590A1 series shotgun with the intended use of work gun on the farm dispatching armadillos, snakes, and other threats, as well as serving as a home defense weapon if necessary. Am only considering this platform since I already have experience with Mossbergs and need the ambidextrous safety feature. Will have ghost ring sights and sling, but nothing else added. Mossberg has recently released a "tri-rail" fore-end that allows a light to be attached via a Picatinny rail. I definitely need the light, but I wanted to solicit input from people who have actually used fore-end attached lights, and specifically the tri-rail. Is this the best way to mount a light to a Mossberg? Is moving the light position when you rack the action a problem? There are other mounting options, too, including the CDM and Elzetta mounts that some here have recommended. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

I threw a Magpul forend on mine, and attached a Scout light.

I had to research what a "Tri-Rail" was:

"is moving the light position when you rack the action a problem?"
If I understand the question, the illuminated area is going to move and shake when cycling the action no matter where the light is mounted. Just stay keep looking where-ever you need to be looking, not at the light's hotspot.

While I don't have a Tri-Rail fore-end, it seems like a good way to mount a light and will work. I've got one shotgun with an aftermarket clamp-on Picatinny rail. This rail is clamped onto the mag-tube, btw. I currently have a Streamlight TLR-1HL on that rail and it works fine. This Streamlight has momentary, constant-on, and strobe.

Thoughts. A regular handgun-type weapon light will work better than a 1" diameter flashlight with only a momentary button on its rear. There are various 1" diameter flashlights which have various operating modes. If there is one, I'd want a light which either has a constant-on mode. Some lights have low, high, and strobe functions which can get annoying to use if you have to cycle through them to get to the mode you want. Give that some thought.

My other two shotguns have Surefire fore-ends which, to me, are the best options, due to the switches and their placement. These lights are either momentary or constant-on.

To be honest, they all suck to me. I've had everything from the TLR-1 in a CDM mount to a $300 surefire forend for my 590 SBS. You won't get one to be as natural as a Scout on an AR15 rail or an X300 on a Glock. The shotgun lights always took thought to use, I can get most of my other lit platform to be second nature...I trained with them, they just cut my hand, weren't where I expected them to be after recoil, or I lost contact with them during rapid fire. I'd pick a cheap option and go from there.

Like acjones30 I tried several.
None thrilled.
I ended up sticking with the Surefire forend. Expensive. A bit heavy. But it's best of what I could come up with, does what it's supposed to.
I'm not unhappy.

This is my setup too. Works extremely well and doesn't bother my hand during recoil.

On an 870, but Magpul forearm, MLOK cantilever, V block & rings, and one of these with an Energizer lithium in it.

Held up to over a years worth of 3 gun matches, 2 turkey seasons, and some slug and buckshot practice. Light and handy.

What barrel is that?

Stock 18.5" barrel, sent to Aimpro Tactical for forcing cone lengthening, threading for chokes, and porting. Lets it reach out and knock down steel floppers more than you'd expect from an 18.5" gun.

How is that barrel porting not eating though the light/mount sitting right on top of it?

The light has some scuzz powder buildup on the body, but functions fine.

The op got good advice from all posters about lights. I wish to emphasize using a cheaper light. One reason is several lights and mount arrangements might be bought and none working really well. The other is that the emphasis here is farm/utility use and not law enforcement. I do wish to point out that the op can buy two Walmart Mossberg 500 shotguns for the price of one 590a1. He can then proceed to modify one as he sees fit and have the other in reserve. A really good used gun find would be a 590 which would come equipped with the desired sights and be lighter(handier)than its 590a1 brother.

I appreciate all the advice so far. It has been very difficult to find a model I wanted, but I was able to order a 500 series today. It has the 20" barrel and ghost ring sights and is way cheaper than the 590A1. It does not have the tri-rail, so I suspect I'll end up trying a mount to the magazine tube, such as http://www.cdmgear.com/lightmounts.html .

Congrats and enjoy the new boom stick. According to buddies with the 590A1, it is awesome but heavy, and overkill for normal civilian shotgunning. Finding parts is some times problematic since it is milspec vs normal parts on the 500/590. I have a 20ga 500 combo, and it is plenty good enough for skeet, trap and wearing an 18" barrel when rigged for HD duties.
