Insight CVL Application Question

What is the importance as to how old a CVL unit is? Does it deteriorate or something?

I'd like additional training on how to work with one. None of my previous LEO Tac schools have ever touched on lasers. Does anyone have any recommendations on training and PPT's available?

I've got one (for now...trying to trade it for something I need more). It's nice, and VERY convenient in low-light or when shooting around cover.

Age really only applies for warranty purposes, though it's possible for a diode to burn out, eventually. Just hope that it happens withing the warranty period!

I may have some suitable training material in my hopper, let me know what you're looking to find out. Otherwise, since Insight makes pretty much every MFAL device the USMC uses or thought about using, I'm frequently on the horn with their training guy for a question or an argument.

It is a born on date for when the diode was made.

If you have a red dot optic (Aimpoint, EOTech, etc), a visible laser is really worthless IMHO.

I think the CVL makes a great close range back up aiming device for low light conditions. I work at night and my "BUIS" are basically useless if my eotech goes down or dies or what ever mr. murphy decides to do to it when I really need it. So I just squeeze the pad for the CVL or flip her on and she's there when I need her. Thats my .02 anyway.

The CVL comes in very handy when shooting in low-light, around cover, or through an obscuring screen (smoke or fog). I'm not sure it's entirely accurate to say that it's worthless if you have a red dot...perhaps you meant to say that it's a different tool in the toolbox that sometimes serves a similar purpose?

Having owned and used lasers for a good many years, I know exactly what they are good for and what they are not.

They are SLOW on target when compared to a red dot and of course designate your position. This makes them worthless compared to a good red dot.

Lasers can be a secondary or tertiary system, but are not a good choice as a primary sighting system.

They have a purpose, but mostly as a back up system. If they are IR, then that is a whole different ball game.

They're worth their weight in gold for doing CQB with gasmasks. Especially onboard ships. Due to the extreme close-quarters on ships, even without gasmasks, bringing the gun up to get a proper cheek-weld (even with Aimpoints or Eotechs) isn't always an option. Especially if you have to suddenly swing 90+ degrees. Our MK18's always come with a CVL. :D

I am sure there are some "niche" areas for their use. 90% of the users though have no need for them (especially since they do not fight with a gas mask or are boarding ships.

true, but if everyone only had what they "needed" on their rifles, then there wouldn't be any cool "gear porn" threads! Hahaha! Anyhow, to answer the original question, the Navy is super cheap and stingy, and some of our CVL's look more like WWI relics then anything else, yet they still work great. I would have one on my personnal carbine, but they costs way too much...

I have mixed feelings on laser systems... I agree with the one poster who said if you have any type of holographic site (aimpoint or eotech) there really isn't much use for a visible laser... If your aimpoint or eotech batteries die, use your iron sites, OR have enough skill to use muscle memory to where you can bring your rifle up from low ready and be on target.

Also, all that extra weight really adds up. On my carbine, i have the eotech 551 and the M900A surefire light and let me tell ya, its night and day when i take that light off. Adding any type of laser will weight you down just that little bit more.

oh, and IR lasers are a whole different level. those things work great.
