These are the (3) most common BCG steels being used in today's AR/M4 industry (from what I read about). I know just a little bit about metallurgy, but, not enough to distinguish what comes into play when each steel is used for BCG's. My (2) AR's use 9310 steel for the BCG's. I also own (2) BCG's that are made from C158 steel. I was thinking about buying a Nickel Boron BCG that is made from 8620 steel. From what I have read, 9310 is the best BCG steel. Are there any members here that are familiar with BCG metallurgy to provide some knowledge about this? Thanks.

8620 is what the body is made from

so are you asking what "bolt"

Are you asking about the bolt, carrier or key?

All three are mil-spec'd as different materials for some very good reasons.

158 vs 9310.

there plenty of threads on that

NiB is not the best coating for a BCG, if you want something better check out NP3 coated BCG's, I believe Robar, Wilson, and Sionics all offer them.

I was asking about the whole BCG. The bolt and key are usually made from the same steel.
For instance, the BCM BCG is C158 steel. This includes the bolt and key as well.
I just see all (3) BCG steels being used by different BCG companies. They can "claim" that their BCG is the best because of the steel it's made from, but, how are we as a "consumer" to know this?

I don't think this is correct, can someone else confirm the key and bolt are of same material?

Bolts are carpenter 158 or 9310. The carrier is 8620 (should be). Where are you seeing bolts made from 8620, or carriers and keys made from C158 or 9310?

The BCM website states the bolt is made from C158. PSA states this as well. The Nickel Boron BCG I was interested in, made by Ground Zero Precision, states the carrier is 8620 steel, bolt is C158, and the cam pin is 4340 steel.
I read about so many BCG's that it's hard to keep track of which BCG maker is made from what kind of steel. I just know that I see the (3) steels that I stated, used a lot for BCG's.

This man is correct. Nickel Boron is not your friend.

And we have many, many threads on BCG steel composition.
