Ghost In The Shell is based on a classic 90s Japanese animated movie, which is a favorite of many and a classic in the genre which influenced various well known film makers. She was nude in the animated movie for much of it. Sadly, not the case with Scarlett Johansson in this movie...If the trailer is an indicator, could be a classic!

F***ing SWEET! Bato, wonder if that was Project 2501 at the end, just awesome. Really high hopes for this.

Now we need all those years of rumors about Cowboy Bepop to come true (Keanu Reeves was supposed to be Spike).

Rumors, even (fake) previews for it have been floating around for a few years now. They never come to fruition though. :(

ETA:
I wonder if it'll be a Rhino or honest to goodness Mateba that Togusa packs.

I. Am. So. In.

I remember when anime wasn't cool nor mainstream and the two big ones for me that I really liked quite a bit were Battle Angel and GITS.

ScarJo is not my first choice for The Major. I'd sooner have Krysten Ritter who bulked up a little. She has that gaunt angular look. ScarJo is too rounded.

I dont think she was nude, it was just how the thermoptic camo looked. The movie trailer looks, to me, how it would look for real. GITS was to the 90s as Akira was to the 80s.

If GITS does well.....I want to see Appleseed or Tank Police next.

Just rent/buy a bunch of M60A3s, futurize em a bit and get a pissant redhead firebrand and film in Detroit. Bingo, instant Tank Police.

Jessica Biel?

Kate Beckinsale?

Kate Beckinsale?

Nah. Maybe Sienna Gullory(sp?) circa 2004 when she did Resident Evil.

I just think Krysten Ritter is underrated and already looks like a cyborg.

There are a LOT of cosplay girls out there from 20s-30s that really look spot on like the Major and that's out of their own pocket. Esp. That one chick who SBR'd a PS90 just to have a rifle like the Major and a Beretta Cougar. She said they were her only guns and just because of GITS.

ScarJo is too short and too played out. The Major is semi-tall, well figured, but kinda angular. You can tell she's a full conversion just looking at her. I always though Kiefer Sutherland would be a good Batou.

We'll see. She does okay as Black Widow but The Major always leaves you with more questions than answers and that's hard to convey. Like working with mercury. She's not emotionless, she's not a Terminator, she's just pragmatic and jaded.

Then it was a transparent suit that made her appear totally nude. Same difference for me at least! Yup, you can see the "suit" tear at 1:31 of this final battle scene. Possible NSFW:

This looks amazing.

That was one of my favorite movies growing up.

The Depeche Mode cover is the icing on the cake.

Now for an Akira film...

This could be one of the first live action manga-anime films they've done right. I loved the Ghost in the Shell series, one of my favorite Anime. I am really looking forward to this.

I got a pretty bad feeling watching the trailer personally. This stuff just doesn't translate to live action. A lot of Manga doesn't even make the transition to Anime well.

I think the aesthetics translate well. ScarJo looks the part of the Major (doesn't sound the part imo) and the city gave off a very cool cyberpunk vibe like the show can at times. It has me excited, personally. I am a little surprised they aren't doing the Laughing Man first though.

That'll be 2nd gig. ;)

I am very hesitant to hope for a live action Akira. I still lament not keeping my original, pre explanation and Kuh-NAY-dah instead of Canada VHS copy and wonder if it would be just as watered down. Not to mention all the other failed Live Action and Anime attempts in the past (Manga -> Anime, Anime -> Live Action and everything in between including video games (most of which never made is Stateside)).

I remain Hopeful regardles though.

Standing by for Robotech (or Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada for the purists). Hell, even The Shadow Chronicles.

She'd probably need to bulk up a tad to look the part. Sound the part, she'd be good though.

Firefly

Actually.....even at 40+ Milla Jovovich would be a better Major. She has the body type, just bulk and cut a bit. The Major's body was designed to look like a normal woman but still able to combat terrorists.

To this day, The Major's actual backstory has never been revealed. It's hinted at that she may be Batou's age or older and may not have even been initially female.

I think technology has improved to where some anime stories can be translated to movies if the source material is respected and properly. I still want to see the movie because these trailers are short and GITS is way more cerebral than 2 minutes of film.

If done right, I'd really like a Bubblegum Crisis movie. It was like Streets of Fire in a way. It's the most accessible cyberpunk anime. It doesn't get all philosophical/religious/mind screwy. Just hot chicks in robot suits sticking it to the man with a poppish rock and roll soundtrack.

And hopefully this is something they rely on from a story standpoint in this film. Did anyone see the Attack on Titan film?

There was a movie? All i got was to watch the first season on Toonami, and I don't even know if that was the entire first season since it just stopped. Never really dug deeper though.

Sttill hoping they do Neon Genesis Evangelion 3.33 for the holidays like they have with 1.11 and 2.22 previously.

Yeah they did a live action film earlier this year. I loved the Anime, but I haven't got around to seeing the film.

I have never seen the Evangelion series at all, but I have heard great things.

I saw Attack on Titan movie....it really, really, really sucked. Stick to the anime

The point of Mikasa is that she was the last Asian girl on earth just about. That's why she was so different. But tjis is lost in a film where everyone is Asian and in the Anime they were European.

Death Note I liked as a movie moreso than the anime. It had the same guy from Battle Royale and I simply liked it more. A lot of Death Note was filler with extra people I didn't care about.

Per Evangelion, I envy you for not having seen it because sI wish I could watch it again for the first time. It's a bit dated and End of Evangelion was rushed but don't binge watch it. You gotta take your time. Pacific Rim was as close to an Eva film as we will get but not as good.

Shinji is a whinebox and you will need cheese for his whine. But it has fun episodes and some really bleak episodes. It's really manic Depressive but every other month I'd hit up Tower Records('memba them?) and pay like 30 dollars or so for a 2 ep VHS.

Watch the series first. Absolutely amazing, but much more boy coming of age rather than everyone dealing with war like with Robotech. The movies have a tendency to change the ending, or entire story/timeline while not being as in depth.

This. It is more about adolescence than kicking ass in a huge mech. It is one of those shows that is easier to watch as a punk teenager than an adult. As a kid you can relate to being forced into stuff, uneasy around women, angst at not fitting in, not knowing how to deal, and discovering who you are.

As an adult you'll be screaming "DUDE, YOU HAVE A BIG ASS MECH WITH BIG GUNS AND YOU LIVE WITH HOT CHICKS. WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM?!"

Ghost in the Shell Props and Costumes from Tokyo Event - Collider (http://collider.com/ghost-in-the-shell-movie-props-costumes-images/#batou-eye-attachments)

So Motoko (ScarJo)'s rocking a Glock 17Gen5 (joke - we'll get a Gen5 when thermoptic camouflage and prosthetic bodies become a reality) and a Tavor and Batou's got a Crye SIX12 (or a shotgun that's supposed to look like it's a SIX12).

The Gunman Uzi, with the tsuka ito around the handguard is pretty cool.

But the Major's Tavor doesn't look like it belongs in GITS (although the description for it means that it might be intended to be camouflaged as motorcycle parts).

I am impressed with the authenticity of the costumes and props in that write-up. I always though they were using JS 9 bullpups in the anime, So I agree the Tavor doesn't quite look right.

Most of the time they were using fictional bullpups based largely on the FN P90.

The original movie they were using fictional Serb-ish SMGs chambered in 5.7x28mm and then for the SAC (the TV series), they used fictional bullpups made by a fictional company called Seburo.

I believe that Seburo shows up as an arms manufacturer in Appleseed, another Shirow Masamune manga/anime.

That (with a can), an Agency Arms NOC, and Batou's trenchcoat and one would be ready to sign up for Section 9.

Here's a similar thing designed by a video game gun designer that's slated for a mid-2017 release:

It is real. Hera Arms is German and sell through LANworld. Stock, Foregrip, rail, billet upper receiver (no lower sadly).

Everything pictured should be available (minus receiver) by January stateside. I know I'm getting the stuff and an SBR w/ can to get my Section 9 on as well.

I want the fattest can I can get. This will be a "just for fun" deal.

Stuff like this, plus VR, plus the tablet I type on reminds me at times that more or less I do live in a cyberpunk world....sorta.

I'm a fan of the original movie and the subsequent TV series and other movies, so I've mixed feelings with the approach of the live action version as I'm so familiar with all the characters. I hope it lives up to my expectations, but I'm trying to keep and open mind and enjoy it as a 'stand-alone' movie. See what I did there? :p

I also agree that Scarlett isn't who I'd have picked to play the major for the reasons mentioned by others here. Kinda needs to be taller, leaner and more buff (if we're talking the version from the original movie). Arise saw a younger, more girlish major.
