View Full Version : Got a knife? Axe? Bow? Any edged sharp pokey thing? Post it!!
Have a favorite knife? An ugly knife? A beater or daily carry knife? A knife you are in love with or ashamed of? Bows, Axes, spears, or anything else with a blade or edge? Go ahead and post a picture, just make sure it is your picture.
Here is a knife that John Noveske gave me. The condensed story is that John had talked to Strider about having knives made, and not a generic knife, but one that John designed himself. A few of the knives were made as production samples, and they were pretty close to what John wanted, but not exact. John gave the other few production samples to some awesome people (including his sons), and kept one for himself. John gave me his personal knife, and I've kept it as is since then. Later there was a production run made, you can tell those by the markings and serial numbers. Most of my blades aren't anywhere near this interesting, but I figured it was a story some people might appreciate.

Reminds me of a Larry Harley blade. I love the overbuilt, hard use style of fixed blade.
This is another iPhone pic, my ZT 302, and Timberline "Special Service", a knife that is out of production and difficult to find now.

Himalayan Imports Padam Suga. Another cellphone pic snapped on a late summer afternoon last year. I wish the colors in the pic were more vibrant, as it stands they are kind of muted.

I like the pic overall but it suffers from the same muted colors and poor clarity as most of the pics I took with my older phone.
ESEE knives may be my favorite knives. I carry an Izula everyday.

Some of my older pics...
Coogler HAK - I have this attached to a belt near the buckle, so it's concealed under the loose end of the belt:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/militarymoron/hakcoogler.jpg
Trident Knives TCFM 02 - very solid knife, but a bit heavy:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/militarymoron/trident8.jpg
This was one of the first Strider DBs with gunner grips (which were modified Mod 10 grips - this was done in 2007); it was done by my request and also partly to gauge interest. Based on the positive response they got, gunner grips became a regular option for the DB. A sharp eye might notice that the honeycombs are 'vertical' on the grip, instead of longitudinal on the production grips.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/militarymoron/DB-GG-S.jpg
It's a nice companion to my MARS Armament 1911:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/militarymoron/m1.jpg
Bawidamann Blades prototype Skraeling - Ben had some different variations in mind and sent me drawings for my input. We made some tweaks, and this is the final configuration based on what I wanted:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/militarymoron/pup1.jpg
Probably my favourite folder - the Zero Tolerance ZT0360.SKD, which is exclusive to SKD Tactical. I lost this particular one in a motorcycle accident:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/militarymoron/edc.jpg
I was later very fortunate to collaborate with SKD on my own MM version; the ZT0360.SKD.MM with my MM Skull logo etched on the blade and limited to 103 pieces. It's still my favourite EDC folder:

A knife I made for my son when he started scouts. I took the picture on the hood of my newly waxed pickup. I liked the glossy black background.

This is from when I was doing knife testing on a DPx Gear 6" HEST. It ended up being a great blade, and this is what rides on my go belt for when I'm out in the woods or mountains.

Blade from Jantz supply. Bought a piece of Tulip wood from Woodcraft Supply. You can see where I split the wood at the lower left pin. first time I ever tried to make a knife of any sort. It actually turned out better than I expected. It didn't throw me off trying to make a knife but gave a me a lot more respect for knife makers. Especially since I was just doing the easy stuff.

It's an ML Knives Kephart. 1095 with patina. Tiger Maple with brass pins. I had it custom made for me in 2012 by Matt Lisniewski to honor a long gone relative of mine. Very cool knife, and one that I hope my son appreciates some day when it becomes his.

I RARELY carry a knife, but if I do, it's my Spyderco Military. The first one I had was thrown away at the San Diego Airport because we were already running late for our flight. My wife had it in her purse because she thought I forgot it at home. LOL, sweet girl, things can be replaced. I've had this one for about 4 years now and really enjoy it.

This is my Ken Onion Leek. D2 blade edge. I use it to open boxes that have gun parts in them, whittle weenie-roasting sticks when I'm camping, and all sorts of other random chores.

Thanks. I EDC mostly my Spyderco autos and sometimes carry either a Police or Military Spyderco. I do display a rotating display in my home office.
I have collected for well over 50 years and finally have a family member (oldest grandson) who appears to be "into" knives.
I hope he'll have room for all of mine someday. There's also hope his brother will follow his lead.

Nice Damascus steel pattern. Nice blade.
... and the saw cuts on the back of the Noveske blade would be for ...? Oh yeah, getting caught in whatever you tried to cut with it ... Useless design feature  there IMHO; too 'Rambo' for my tastes.
Personally I opt for custom blades forged from old files. Or some Spydeco variant/model, like military' as shown above, for daily carry.

My grandfather was a WW2 veteran and a Pearl Harbor survivor, he was two ships behind the Arizona when Pearl Harbor was attacked. When my grandfather passed away, he left me his tool box. Inside were a bunch of files that I thought I'd never have a use for. After seeing a lot of knives being made out of old files I decided to find a blade smith that could make knives out of the old files. I found a guy on Instagram that makes knives. He's a retired MSG from 5th SF group, after talking to him and looking over the pictures of the work that he's done, I decided he was my guy. I'm having four knives made, one for my dad, brother, nephew and me. Here are a couple pictures of the finished work so far. 45479

I was given this ja henckels lockback over 30 years ago by a close family friend. He picked it up in europe while serving in the US Army. I have no idea how old the knife could be. I am not sure if it would be pre or post WW2. I am trying it out for edc over my benchmade.

So far it feels good in the hand, has a wide blade that appears functional, and I have large hands so I have no complaints about the handle. However, I'm currently working on another review, so playing with the BK3 has to sit on the shelf.

At 1/4" wide, the BK-2 is often described as more of a pry bar than a knife. I can get pretty heavy. If you like the design, though, there is the 1/8" BK-10 (which has a slight clip point). There is also a 1/8" BK-12 (also known as the Doug Ritter RSK MK2), which is the same design as the BK-2 but 1/8" thick rather than 1/4".
I have the BK-10, and I'm finding it to be a great all-around knife. Though I have my eye others in the line.

It can easily be a knife that you pass down to your grandchildren. I removed the factory finish after a camping trip, I was splitting logs using a rock to hammer the knife through them and chipped the factory finish. I maintain the blade with blade steel and once took it to a knife sharpener to put on his paper wheel. The only thing I’ve done that affected the edge in anyway was cutting a steak on my stoneware plate.

The bag was a giveaway at a conference and turned out to be a good throw-on for classes where I can carry tools, first aid, water, and a few magazines in case I get a chance to shoot. Most importantly I can get it off without much effort at lunch time ;-) . The funky looking monocular is from Wolf and it's actually pretty darn decent for ~$30. At 8X it works for reading targets at 50-plus yards.

This M-95 puukko is a favorite among Scandinavian servicemen. Designed by Finnish Defense Forces Captain J.P. Peltonen and as I understand it, made by him in his shop in a corner at the Fiskars factory. No fish hooks, no compass, no Damascus, just a simple but solid all-around blade. Finland has a blade culture; Mom always said when she was a little girl every Finlander had a Puukko, not carried for show.
So this is what in English is, simply, the Ranger Knife. Knife being Puukko in Finnish. It is rather unfortunate for the US market that the Finnish word for Ranger (loose translation) is… Sissi. So this is the Sissipuukko. Sissi also / can also mean something like partisan or resistance / guerilla fighter. At any rate if you take a look at Finland's Winter War with Russia, "ain't no sissies".
Shown with what I think are the ultimate in slugs and buckshot.

Al Mar Hawk (Model# 1002TW - TITANWOOD scales)
In the 80’s and early 90’s I used to go every year with friends to the Las Vegas S.O.F. Conventions, mainly for the huge gun show and the Firepower Display. I shot a GE Minigun, a Ma Deuce (mounted on a half track), and a FA American 180 w/275 round drum, all for the first time at the desert range’s rental bays.
Another annual ritual at the S.O.F. gun show was visiting Al Mar at his company booth. A good friend in Seattle would give me a bunch of cash to buy a dozen or more small Al Mar blems or seconds that seemed to only be available at this venue. My friend gave them out to his friends and family for Christmas gifts. Since Al’s booth was always the first place I went when the show doors opened he got to know and expect me to show up. Al would already have 20 or so assorted small knives ready for me to choose from. I would always buy the models that Al recommended. His “blems” would be anyone else’s top of the line. He was VERY particular about what went out with his name on it.
As usual at the ’92 show I went right to the big Al Mar booth to get Christmas knives. Al came right over and started to apologize that he had very few seconds to sell that year. He had cracked down on QC and the result was a big improvement. He only had 7 of the smaller folders to sell. I said that was fine and bought them all. After I paid for them Al reached into his pocket and brought out the knife in the picture above. He said I had been a good customer over the years and it was just a small gesture of thanks.
I then had one of my friends take this picture of Al and me.
https://i.imgur.com/Fv3vhGy.jpg
(BTW, his grip was like a bench vise!)
Once back home I turned over the 7 knives I bought from AL to my friend plus the balance of his cash. I kept Al’s knife. I have had it now for over 25 years and carry it from time to time.
Sadly, Al died a few months after the ’92 S.O.F. show from an aneurysm. It was only after his passing that I learned he and I were both Industrial Design graduates of the same school; Art Center College of Design, now located in Pasadena, CA. Al had earned a Masters Degree… his masters thesis was building and launching a working 2-man submarine!
R.I.P. Al.
In the Paul Harvey* tradition; “And now you know the rest of the story.”
*Some may have to look this guy up.

Those become very special. Probably 95%+ of all my other knives have 0 memories connected to them... they're just good tools/art.
Over the last 2 years I have been slowly giving my oldest grandson some of my small folders. He loves them. They might be remembered by him.

The Kershaw Shuffle II is a good, useful EDC blade. One of its best points is its ~$17 delivered price tag. If lost or confiscated (e.g. TSA) you won't get as worked up as you would if the same thing happened to your Chris Reeve!

My son is 10 years old now, and just started shooting. Some of my guns have sentimental value, some don't. But, in case he decides to sell any of them after I'm gone, I want to make sure he knows what he has, so I've actually started putting together an illustrated book that tells the story of each one. I have knives as well, but none have the sentimental value like the limited run of 0360.SKD.MM (militarymorons edition with my skull logo) that ZT knives did for SKD tactical. I have kept serial numbers 0000 and 0001 NIB for him. I'm still daily carrying SN 0003.

My photography skills continue to evolve-- sideways, I'm afraid.
But here's a machete I bought in Nicaragua in 1992 for $3.00. Everybody had one so I figured..... I should too. Here's where I could say....
"Bringing an M1 carbine along on trips to local seaside bars was frowned upon if you didn't go to the right one with the right people". That would be 100% true, but of course, I did not have an M1 carbine with me.
While there I discovered Flor de Cana rum which remains a favorite. You could not find it here at that time but now it's not terribly hard.
The chunk of firewood is Osage Orange. I would never put that thing in whole, it would burn a hole to China-- it's impressive as firewood and for making things. I had put some small pieces in, trying to get it to "do its thing" for the pic but failed. O-O coals, when you open the draft, will shoot sparks out 4-5'. Each one pops at the end if its flight, bursting like a mini-firework. The sparks actually seem to be rocket propelled, not just ejected.

A prototype carbon fiber knife - 9.5" O.A.L. - 4.75" blade - SHARP!
-with custom prototype sheath made by Tim Wegner way before BLADE-TECH became big. I've known Tim for 35+ years when he was making made-to-order custom Kydex in his shop in Puyallup, WA.
He would sell me numbered production knives that he received from manufacturers. These knives Tim used to produce prototype sheaths for the various makers. He has come a long way.

Original Bowie knife from Solingen Germany, the Sabre Monarch 171.
First knife I ever bought with my own money. Out riding bikes with my big sister, and we came upon a garage sale. It cost me $7 of my lawn mowing money back in the 70s. I abused the crap out of it as a kid & teen. Just had it re-profiled (broken tip) and sharpened over the summer. Then had this kydex sheath made. She's shaving sharp again after all these years.

Ladies, and Gentlemen, I give you the Applegate Fairbairn dagger. One of my favorites. I love this knife. You love this knife. (or at least you should) Everybody loves this knife. In fact, it's pretty much the standard that you judge a good combat knife by...
But as always... it came with an insanely crappy sheath.
So I got a guy I met on another forum that does custom Kidex work. Picked up 3 of my knives today after my VA appointment down in Indy that were getting new custom Kydex sheaths made for them, and it makes them much more user friendly.
On to the sheath... The knife snaps in firmly, and stays in place. The molle straps on the back can be mounted horizontally, or vertically, as the eyelets are spaced the same distance apart, or they can just come off. The Multicam on the front is a bit more expensive, but I just got the regular black on the rear. On the bottom, there is a space molded in between the layers that acts as a drain hole. Now, all that play time with the red rubber trainer will pay off, and I can put this bad boy to use. (Well, I can put it on the war belt anyway. I hope I don't actually need to put it to use.) I've has this one for almost 3 years, and have almost never used it because the factory sheath sucked so bad.

Ohta Chikahide Gendaito.
A very good Gendai bladesmith. The blade was mostly roached when I found it.
The balance and length of blade (28") are exceptional. Hada is Itame, Hamon is "Horsetooth" O Choji.
I undertook a major restoration of blade (3 yrs.) and new Koshirae (fittings). Fittings are old; Tsuba is Koto era (late 1500's) "Kiku" Iron "battle Tsuba", Fuchi/Gashira newer Shin/Shinto era, "pretty" pieces.
