Newbie here. Purchased a LaRue Tactical PredatOBR 5.56 16" and need to put a scope on it.

Primary application is range shooting 100-200 yds with possible expansion up to 400 yds in future. No more than 500.

LaRue is a very nice rifle so I feel compelled to put an equally nice scope on it but don't want to waste money either.

Budget up to $2k max for scope. Ideally less than $1k.

Here are some I was considering after researching:

Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-12.5x42

$1,105

Nightforce NXS 2-10x42

$1,700 - $1,900

Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42

$650

Zeiss HD5 2-10X42

$900

Burris Extreme Tactical 2-10X42

$950

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Reticles are an entirely different conversation. BDC or mil dot?

Thanks in advance.

I'll put in a strong recommendation for the Sig Sauer Tango 4 4-16x44. It's a first focal plane scope, mil-hash illuminated reticle, excellent tracking/mechanicals. The elevation knob has a zero detent, meaning the turret "locks" down on zero, but you can push thru and dial past it if needed. Elevation also has a turn indicator, and parallax is very easy to dial out. 30mm main tube, built very sturdy, glass is more than good enough for the application (unless you're going to be birding with it). Sig also has a lifetime no-fault warranty.

I got mine for just under $800 shipped.

Nice set up. I will take a look at Sig Sauer too. Thanks

Is a scope a definite need?

For 100 to 200 yards, with a 16" barrel, I really don't see a scope being too beneficial... especially in those power ranges. I just bought a 4.5-14x for my .308 Remington. Both of my 16" ARs run Aimpoints... and probably getting another for my new Tavor. I do have a magnifier for it, if squeezing a little more range is needed. Not ideal, but good gap filler between getting a longer ranged rifle.

For optics, I prefer spending a little bit for clear glass. I got a Leupold Mark 4 for under $1,000 with MidwayUSA's Black Friday sale. The scope that originally was on that rifle was a 25+ year Leupold, and I was sold on them looking through it. Really nice picture, and the new one is in the same realm.

But I did do an 18" AR build with glass. I wanted a complete FDE rifle, so my options were limited without having the scope refinished... which I don't suggest. I got a Weaver KASPA 1.5-6x. Not really ranging it past 300 yards, but seems to do the job for what I was looking for.

Hope you don't take it as pushing you away from a scope, but just interested in your reasoning. Wish you the best in your search.

I have another AR15, much cheaper gun that I put a Primary Arms Red Dot on along with a Vortex flip out 3X magnifier that does work quite well up to 200 yards. There are some other mid-range rifle ranges I'm looking in to that I think a scope would be more suited for.

Thanks for your suggestions, I look in to. Your color scheme cool.

Roger that.

I went Leupold mainly for the quality of glass, but also for the MOA adjustment/reticle options. I find MOA a lot easier than MIL, guess due to having a Garand, M1A, and a M1903 USMC sniper replica. Got the TS-32x1 MOA reticule and Mark 4 turrets... magnification was a little high for what I originally was looking for, but not a huge deal. Got it at a decent price, and opposed to the Leupold hunting scopes I was also looking at, I don't need to add dials or send it to their custom shop.

SIG does a good optic at a competitive price. I bought my father one of their red dots (Holosun clone), and was pretty impressed of it (the SIG name means a lot, if it ever takes a dump). I've also had good results with Weaver higher end optics.

I ended up purchasing the Zeiss. I've been going in circles with what to get for too long. If I don't like I will resell. Arrived today and looks very nice. Got a good price using coupon code online at Sport Optics out of Louisiana.

I learned today the VX-6 line by Leopold has been discontinued. New line out in 2017.
