about to build another rifle. kinda leaning towards wanting a 14.5 but don't really want to buy a complete upper from BCM as i like giessele rails. if i build a 14.5, who do y'all recommend sending the upper to for muzzle device pinning? (no local gunsmiths). or would y'all recommend just avoiding the trouble of sending off the upper and building another 16in? thanks

Personally I'd stick with the 16 over the 14.5. If you decide to go the 14.5 route I hear good things about ADCO.

I'd echo this...the 14.5 isn't enough of a difference to justify the hassle of shipping, pinning, and restricting anything that requires removing the muzzle device. 16" is close enough unless you want to go quite a bit shorter.

That being said I've used ADCO for several differences projects on ARs, 10/22s, and a bolt rifle and they've been outstanding, frequently with same day turn around.

I'll echo others' sentiments and recommend a 16" barrel instead of the 14.5". I had a 14.5" upper for an SBR in the past and while it was a cool configuration it wasn't nearly as handy as the 11.5" that replaced it, or the 16" gun I built for my wife. If you're really wanting to minimize length then the best route would generally be an SBR.

I strongly encourage you to compare a properly pinned and welded 14.5 against a 16" upper with an A2 flash hider. Once you see the realistic difference, you won't want to go through the hassle.

I used to think the same thing until I installed a 14.5" SOCOM barrel on a Colt and shot it. It's nothing I can quantify, but the rifle now feels like everything has fallen in to place. The difference is subtle but I was surprised to realize, I don't want a 16" barrel any more.

IG is right- You have to shoot both to decide for yourself whether or not the 14.5" is worth the hassle. For myself, it is

I've done the pinned thing, thought I knew better, turns out I didn't. Barely worth the hassle.

Perfectly happy with my 14.5" BCM with pinned and welded A2X, but I only installed an LWRC rail which doesn't require removal of the muzzle device or anything.

If I was building a rifle like you described I would just go with a 16" barrel.

Here's a pic of a 6920 and a 6921CK upper, 14.5" with a 1.5" BCM Mod1. It's not an exact measurement, but close.
I only bought my 14.5 upper because I got a great deal on Armslist. I realize now why it was cheap. It's because you have to find and pay someone to pin and weld it, you have to buy a longer Comp/FH and you're stuck with it.
Having said that, I'm glad I did.

I own an SBR and 3 14.5's so for me it was worth it. I wouldn't say it's worth it to you, only you can decide that. I've carried 14.5's for work and for the military for years and prefer it so that's what I did.

As long as you know what you want, in regards to muzzle device and hand guard, 14.5 is a perfectly legitimate option. There is about 1.25 inches, give or take, between a 16" (w/ A2) and a 14.5 (w/ A2X). My favorite upper is a BCM middy upper with a DD LITE III rail and a pinned BCM A2X FH. Best handling rig i own and i have no desire to change out any of the components. Just make sure that you do your research and handle guns that are set up the way yours will be. Make certain you know what you want.

Unless I was building a clone, I'd just go with the 16 inch. I like the flexibility to change handguards and flash hiders without the hassle of unpinning / pinning.

I have a 16 and 2 14.5 inch guns. I prefer the 14.5 but it is a hassle and the size difference is minimal. When I got mine having an SBR was not an option in my state. Now that I have several SBR's 1"-1.5" is not a concern at all.

The one thing I would recommend if you do go 14.5 is think long term. Do you have a suppressor or plan on buying one eventually? If you do you might want to make sure you have the muzzle device for your can pinned and welded now so you don't have to pay someone to remove the old one and pin and weld again down the road.

thanks guys, i think the 14.5 is out. i'll either build a 16in or build a 11.5 pistol, probably the 16

Pistols are cool and can be SBR'd.
