I am new to AR's, I live in NY, so if I want anything other than a 10 rd mag I need to get a pre-ban mag.
Can anyone recommend a few names to look for. What I have found for sale are from companies like Sanchez, Parsons, Adventureline, Kay and US Thermolds.
Is one brand better than an other?
Is there anything I should look for?

Thanks for any help you can offer,

JB

Andy thanks for the link.

Is there something wrong with the US Thermamold? They seem to be the cheapest (price wise) of the pre-ban mags and if someone is selling multiple manufactures everything sells out and the US Thermamold are still available.

Thanks,

JB

Regarding the Thermold mags, yeah, most people avoid them. Only every once-in-awhile you'll find someone who loves them, but it seems like about 90% of the time, all you hear is how the split, bulge and break at the slightest provocation.
I feel your pain having to try to find legal magazines. Absolutely ridiculous situation that the socialist leaders perpetrate on their People's Republics.
I've got a stash of about 100 30rd mags (mostly Parsons Adventure Line) that I purchased way back in the mid 80's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think you could "import" pre-ban items into ban states. Or do you have to locate them in existing stores within the borders of NY?

You can buy any pre-ban items from anywhere in the country, and have them shipped to NY. I've bought all my pre-ban mags (LaBelles) online.

Of the USGI mag manufacturers Sanchez and Cooper Ind. are not good choices as some of there production runs were not up to spec. O-kay Ind., Parsons Precision, Adventureline and Center Ind. are all GTG. Thermolds will be more trouble than they are worth.

I think that depends on the State. MD for example only allows NEW mags 20 rnds or less to be purchased or shipped into MD BUT I can go out of state and buy what ever I want (doesn't have to be pre-ban) and bring it back legally.

Tell me that makes sense

So it depends I guess.

Coopers = Poopers! That was the old gun show saying when you were looking for USGI mags.

Sanchez had problems too. I specifically banned both of those brands from my stash.

22 is right, as long as it was made before the ban date you can get a mag shipped to NY. There have been instances were I haven't been able to buy something that is legal in NY just because the store/seller has no idea what the laws are but that is a different story all together.

I am new to AR's, is it correct assumption that since not all pre-ban mags were date stamped and newer mags are not stamped there is no definitive way to tell if there pre or post ban...as long as the company was around prior to 1994.

Is there any actual enforcement of this crap? I know it wasn't enforced for shit when it was a federal ban. I.E. there were no authorities doing mag checks and such.

From what I have been told and have seen, there is very little enforcement of Mag, Collapsable stock and other infractions. One fine example is that a LEO in my area was selling his Colt 6920, he offered it to me, I said I can't have that (collapse stock yada yada) his words were "so what" I assume he meant nothing was going to happen. If I would have had the money at the time I would have a nice weapon.

on another topic
The biggest problem I have seen is that free state people are buying up all the pre-ban mags...to what end I don't know. I would think that if you can buy a brand new mag for $15-20 that is better than a 14 year old mag for $10-15.

You answered your own question. $20 v. $10. Best I know most gun owners are cheap.
