Surfing to the edge of the web today and I found this:

Thoughts?

A little too niche in my opinion. The whole non standard mag thing is an immediate red flag. A 55 gr bullet dumps velocity too quickly to love 3350 fps. Shit... I've chronoed XM193 that shot that fast out of a 20 inch. And the 77 gr velocity is achievable with BH mk262 out of a 20 inch barrel.

It strikes me that you're getting a few headaches in trade for shortening the barrel only 2 inches.

That gains you what? A couple hundred yards?

I don't know man, uses already available 6.8SPC magazines and those velocities are higher than any averages I've seen for XM193 or MK262. The 77gr load in particular is pretty interesting, I agree that the 55gr pill is of limited value for target shooting. Would make for a nice prairie dog evaporator though.

I wonder how well this round will end up doing shooting 600-1000 yards compared to the 223/5.56. That is my biggest curiosity about this round.

Interesting they came out swinging with uppers offered at Midway already, dies, brass, etc.

The Nosler site has some drop charts out to 800 yards. The 77gr load is pretty impressive past 300 yards.

I'm not hating on the round at all. But we've not had any problems with our target (not 5.56 pressure) 77 gr load out to 1000 yards. I mean... there's certainly a niche that it will be great in, but I don't see it getting very wide spread.

They're quoting 2950 fps out of an 18 inch barrel. No Mk262 round's gonna do that in a 20" and never in an 18.

Nice but would be more useful in 6mm pushing 105gr stuff.

Does a cartridge like this get around some rules in ban states... I'm thinking those that only allow .22 and smaller.

It gets close enough if my memory serves me. Maybe I'm a hundred feet off... but I'm thinking the spec/goal of 262 was 2850 out of an 18??

Radian/AXTS just announced they will be building rifles in this caliber.

Not for me... I'm committed to .223/5.56, and the benefits aren't nearly enough to justify the costs of dealing with other cartridges/mags/uppers.

On the other hand, if I were to go bigger than 7.62/.308, then it would be the Nosler 33.

I picked up a dummy round of this cartridge at SHOT this past week and was surprised to see how radically the rim was rebated. Apparently the idea was to allow the use of 5.56/.223 bolts as opposed to the 6.8 diameter. Other than that the cartridge has a visually appealing profile, if looks could kill :-) As to velocity claims and such, since the cartridge has more available powder space yes it should drive bullets down the bore at a faster pace. Personally if I was looking for more power I would opt for a 6.5 Grendel.

2750 from a 20", although true Mk262 usually bests that by a bit.

Ah... 2750. I was off by a hundred. So this round gets nice velocity... but worth the baggage? Maybe for some shooters.

IMHO, only those mentioned in that quote in your signature...

I'd like to play with one if good barrels become available. All I need is a barrel and some magazines. Already have an upper I can use to build on.

What does this really offer over a .223 AI (Ackley improved) wildcat? I understand you are going to get more powder volume, but is the headache of yet another caliber warrant the investment over what is currently available in the wildcat market?
