View Full Version : A rail to solve the shadow?

I'm running a TLR-1 at 12 o'clock on an 10.5". When I use the light, the AAC M4 Suppressor blocks a rather large section of light creating a big shadow. The AAC can has a 1.5" diameter and I'm guessing the only way to solve this will include getting a longer rail, partially over the suppressor to mount the light further out. So 2 questions:

1. Is there a better solution as I'm not a fan of the over the suppressor rail?

2. If the rail is the solution, recommend a quality rail that accepts a 1.5" diameter suppressor?

I mount all my lights at 9 o'clock. There's still a shadow, but it's on the other side of the rifle from your face. Sample of one...

What if you have to run it left handed? Serious question...
I think about this quite a bit...in my dwelling, I need to work left handed more than right handed because of the layout, walls, etc.

I run lights at 10:30ish for the stated reason. Shadow is cast to the right side, and down. If I switch shoulders, the shadow is still angled down. The only way to avoid it is to put the light at 12:00 and just behind the muzzle. If you have a suppressor...well, too bad.

You probably won't find a perfect solution. I prefer the 12 o'clock because the shadow is usually downward and if necessary you can still clear left/right corners without exposing yourself more.

I have the same problem, but I rarely stay slicing the pie for very long, I just get in the room and move down the wall. I set it up for the 99% usage, not the 4 corners in my house I might have to clear.

If this is a dedicated house gun, I'd run a long rail/handguard over the silencer, and put some covers on it. You won't be mag dumping so heat won't be much of an issue, but you'll have the covers in case you do.

OR...
Maybe a cantelieverd mount that puts the light closer to the muzzle. You'll most likely have to run a tape doing that.

I run my light in the 10:30 ish position also. Shadow is down and left. Also allows me to manipulate the light with my left hand.

Are those wired into one switch or 4 separate switches? Interesting set-up. Would certainly help with recoil.

Looks like clicky tailcaps to me, and I think it may be six lights not four.
I think their point was to show that the mount is so unobtrusive that you can literally mount them all the way around without them getting in each others way (and perhaps the way of other gear.)

I just posted it as a joke because it would technically solve the problem. (Sry.)

I do know that there are people out there that use two lights from time to time...

One Mount to rule them all, One Mount to find them,
One Mount to bring them all, and on the rail bind them

For my situation, it's more an outdoor issue vs indoors. Spotting predators among livestock.

Except he isn't using that light, and we have no idea what rail he has.

Well, the rail is a KAC 3.1 URX. Sounds like I need to try a longer rail if I prefer the view without a shadow.

I see 6...why not 8?

Ok, maybe we're on to something. A light at the 12 and 6 position would solve the issue, and not be too obtrusive. I wonder if you could hook them both into a single switch?

Was at the Lonestar Zombie Multigun match and saw lots of guys mount 2 TLR-1 on 3 and 9 o'clock...

Saw this thread a few days ago and was going to also comment about maybe having two. I like two lights and having one at 12:00, big fan of 12:00 esp. when you can have it close enough to the end that the shadow is not bad.

I also thought back to this in 2009, I think:

Thought on it a little more and ordered a piece, it came today, just wanted to do a little experimenting. Got it done and took it over to my suppressor-havin’ pal.

I know there are some downsides but realistically—I think it works. A cover keeps radiant heat from it. I didn’t do if for this proto but I have a sheet of thin mica which is a great insulator, in fact I used it on the above pistol setup. I would bore the collar big enough for a couple layers of it. Ideally this thing would be made of titanium for high-heat strength, and bonus: titanium is a terrible conductor of heat.

Add a remote switch, obviously. Discuss. :-)

Yes, certainly, heat is a concern, but when? When on the range. In a HD kind of application, c’mon, that’s probably not gonna be three mag dumps…..

I always wondered about having powerful little LED's integrally installed in the front face of a picatinny.

Not sure the feasibility but you could theoretically have a light at 12, 3, 6, & 9. I just don't know enough about lights and rails manufacturing to know if you could actually set something like that up.

You say that but it's actually quite a good idea. You can turn both on for double the lumens if needed.
