Any idea on how much an 0-2 aperture can be enlarged and still withstand typical hunt/3 gun/ handling/transport bumps?

Don't know if this helps, looks pretty substantial:

If I was going to fiddle around drilling one I'd just get one of these, match the bit diameter to the countersink and use a drill press to bore it.

Have an XS and it seems to fade out better.

Couldn't find anything on max size before weakening the 0-2 via search so thought I would check if anyone else had tried before modifying one of my other A2 rears.

I'd think it was pretty well protected by the sidewalls of the AR sight assembly.

What's your theory behind the why? I ask because I've often thought about the opposite, having slightly smaller apertures, say .06" and .125" for the two

Less metal between my eye and red dot.

Thread for the smaller apertures perhaps?

You use the small aperture for sighting in the rifle. I would think accuracy would be affected making the 0-2 almost useless, which it is already. Look for different aftermarket apertures or a new pair of glasses is my recommendation

Combination of wanting a sight there and something to flip it over with.

Seems like there was a low light sight that had a notched sight in lieu of the aperture (Meprolight maybe?) that would be perfect (I think) for what I am wanting, but not able to find one.

The M16A1 "night sight" had a 7mm rear aperture.

They're $10 here

Also here one company who makes one where it's just a notch instead of 0-2.
