I've had the old 45-70 in for 6 or 8 months now and here's what I've found:

Pros:
-for a 45-70 it shoots softly due to weight
-accepts Weaver 63B mounts
-More accurate than I expected
-smooth lever function
-the receiver and wood are beautifully finished

Cons:
-IMO, if you want to reach out accurately you will need an optic due to the factory sights.

Good review. The 45-70 is an underrated cartridge.

I have a 405g lead reload that shoots sub 1" groups at 100 yards out of most 45-70 rifles. The 405g load chronographs at 1250 fps out of a 32" barrel and it will knock over an 18" high x 30" wide steel buffalo made out of 1/2" plate at 300 yards. That is with a Vernier peep sight.

The 300g factory ammunition is a good load and as you pointed out is suitable for hunting large game. It has incredible energy and will knock a large 10% gelatin block off a table. The 300g hunting loads I have fired will break wood off the bottom of the table holding the gelatin blocks.

Henry makes a great lever action rifle, I have owned two of them. If I were looking for a lever action 45-70, Henry would be my first choice.
