View Full Version : Anybody using the PWS ratcheting castle nut/end plate with a non-PWS buffer tube?

I've been waiting for the PWS ratcheting castle nut/end plate to be available separately and now that they are I was going to order a few. If you're not familiar with this product, here it is:
https://primaryweapons.com/store/product/ebt-mod-2-end-plate-castle-nut/

As I was getting ready to order I read a negative review on JBO and decided to see if anyone else had any bad experiences. Then I found what appears to be a video made by the guy who left the negative review on JBO:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPbdzOU_frg

Basically he says that the tab that goes into the buffer tube to prevent it from rotating isn't very long, and allows the buffer tub to rotate. It looks like he's using a pistol buffer tube, possibly this one based on the stock:
https://www.kakindustry.com/ar-15-parts/lower-parts/buffer-tubes-and-parts/pistol-buffer-tubes/shockwave-package-black

But looking at pictures of the PWS end plate, that tab does look kinda short. It doesn't look like there are a lot of these out there, so there aren't a lot of reviews - positive or negative. So here I am, asking if anyone here has any experience with this setup - specifically with non-PWS buffer tubes, since I'll be using them with the A5 system and not the PWS buffer tubes.

So, anyone use one of these and have any insight?

I just put one on my 6.8spc with a POF tube. Went on easy. I haven't shot it yet, but I don't see any thing that concerns me. The tube certainly doesn't rotate at all.

ETA: I just watched that video, and I'm not sure what he expected when the lock ring was finger tight.

This has been discussed a few times. If you search the forum for "PWS ratchet" you will get the hits that link to those threads.. You have a low post count so I'll help you out. In the future use the search field on the forum main page, it really does work. You can actually run some pretty robust queries to pull in thread hits.

The first three hits are relative to your question and I think the 5th thread link also.

But here's the search for PWS Ratchet (https://www.m4carbine.net/google.php?cx=010536845846440650985%3Aridd3_u3s3i&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=PWS+ratchet&sa.x=0&sa.y=0&sa=Search&siteurl=www.m4carbine.net%2Fforum.php&ref=www.m4carbine.net%2Fgoogle.php%3Fcx%3D010536845846440650985%253Aridd3_u3s3i%26cof%3DFORID%253A10%26ie%3DISO-8859-1%26q%3DPws%2Bratchet%26sa.x%3D0%26sa.y%3D0%26sa%3DSearch%26siteurl%3Dwww.m4carbine.net%252Fshowthread.php%253F160319-AR10-308-AR-Build-knowledge-thread%252Fpage3%26ref%3Dwww.m4carbine.net%252Fshowthread.php%253F160319-AR10-308-AR-Build-knowledge-thread%252Fpage2%26ss%3D23589j133050531j29%26siteurl%3Dwww.m4carbine.net%252Fshowthread.php%253F160319-AR10-308-AR-Build-knowledge-thread%252Fpage3%26ref%3Dwww.m4carbine.net%252Fshowthread.php%253F160319-AR10-308-AR-Build-knowledge-thread%252Fpage2%26ss%3D23589j133053995j29&ss=6937j11939135j11)

I have two of the PWS MOD2 End Plate and Castle nut on non-PWS buffer tubes. The buffer tube I bought is your standard mil-spec carbine spec that I bought from SOLWG. I had zero issues with installation.

The PWS end plate rotates on the threads, which shouldn't happen regardless of how tight the nut is. I suspect it may be due to the (KAK?) pistol buffer tube he's using, although he claims it happens with other buffer tubes too.

Kind of a longshot, but do you remember if the end plate tab protruded all the way into the slot in the buffer tube? Just wondering if the tab engages only at the ends of the threads. Looking at the pictures, it sure doesn't look as long as the tabs on any of my $4 DPMS end plates.

Thanks. I'm actually subscribed to to this thread, which the other results all point to:
https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?177939-PWS-Enhanced-buffer-tube-Any-thoughts

I figured I'd start a new thread since I'm not interested in using the PWS buffer tube, and that thread was about the buffer tube/end plate/nut combo.

Thanks for the additional data point. I may wind up just buying one to try out.

I figured the RE tube was irrelevant because it doesn't impact the function of the castle nut and RE end plate. I have two AR's using PWS ratcheting castle nut/End plate. Both using A5 tubes. Both AR's are ran pretty heavily and I haven't seen any backing off. I marked the castle nut and my buffer tube and there has been no movement. Nut then again none of my other castle nuts have moved either and they are not staked. I think it's a solid solution so you don't have to stake.

That little tab on the end plate should never be relied on to keep the buffer tube from turning while torquing the castle nut.

Both the lower and buffer tube need to be held in a fixed position while applying torque to the castle nut.

I got the entire set (endplate, castle nut, and receiver extension), but am currently using the KAK pistol receiver extension. I have never had any issues with it loosening or rotating after torquing correctly.

I have two of them, they have been on my AR's for around eight months. I had no issues installing them on my Vltor A5 RE's , and they are still tight, as expected. They are not really needed but they are nice if you have to remove the castle nut for some reason.

Well I believe I had about a 180 degree change in viewpoint regarding Primary Weapon Systems and their ratcheting castle nuts.

Does one of these RE endplates lookl like someone touched this up with a Sharpie? My old SFC eyes could be playing tricks on me.

That's not a trick question. Is it easy for you to identify the two new ones vs. the two old ones? One old one is a dead giveaway, but what do you think?

I've got the setup on both my PWS and I ordered another setup for a billet lower. I will get some pics shortly.

Yeah, the two middle ones.

Can confirm mine is not like that.

Yeah, the two middle ones.

From left to right the 2nd endplate has had a Sharpie used on it. That particular end plate is one of the "brand new" end plates that PWS sent me to replace the bad ones. I quote "brand new" because that's what PWS communicated to me.

Disappointing to say the least.
