Just Finished building my New "SPRish" upper, with a Strike industries Keymod rail, and a WOA 18inch SPR barrel. Im debating on the muzzle brake choice for this upper, I have a spare Rainer Arms mini comp, Two A2 flash hiders, and a benny hill rolling thunder brake. What would you guys choose? this gun will be a 500 yard and in gun, will be getting a nice 1-x variable power optic for is soon as well. I am leaning towards the Rainer mini comp due to it being so short, and it does a pretty good job of mitigating muzzle rise, but also I feel like the A2 could be better as it is a flash hider and has less concussion/fire balls than the other two. Not sure what would be more helpful to me with this gun, flash hiding capabilities, and or muzzle rise/ being able to control the gun a bit better. Open to all suggestions, and id prefer to stay with one of the three I already have due to trying to save for a nice optic.
I know there are threads about this stuff already, but ive read them all and still am unsure of the best options. most likely will either put a bipod on this later on, or just maybe a hand stop to keep the weight down.
New to the AR world still so any info is honestly really helpful.

hopefully this is in the right section.

Since you plan on bipoding it anyway, I'd go with a standard A2 birdcage. I wouldn't use a brake or special MD unless it's needed to make the rifle compatible with a can. Brakes are obnoxiously loud, kick up dust and dirt when shooting prone, and IMO the recoil on a 5.56 isn't enough to warrant one. If you decide you really want to comp it, I'd recommend something mild like a BCM Mod 0, which doesn't throw as much concussion out to the sides as a brake, and still mitigates flash. Your spotter / the shooter next door will thank you.

I used a SLR Rifleworks Synergy BCF 5.56 Mod 1 for this 18" build. Does the job nicely.

Wow, that brake looks incredible. Thanks for sharing that, definitely going to pick one of those up!

Birdcage.
I like the simplicity and I don't need a brake.

Unless you're building a 3gun rifle, I'd go with the A2.

If you want to go completely crazy go with a Surefire SOCOM muzzle brake if flash suppression is not an issue or the Surefire Warcomp if you want a combination brake/flash suppressor.

You can then attach the Surefire Warden Blast Diffuser whenever required, which is designed to direct the concussive blast of the muzzle forward of the weapon system.

If one day down the road you wish to add a suppressor it is already able to accept one.

I have one on this little 16" carbine as well.

Get a shim set to install your muzzle device with. Not crush washers, not peel washers. Then, install the A2 and see how it shoots for you. This will give you a baseline. Then, try the other two and see how they compare. It's the only way to determine which muzzle device you should install on your rifle.

When installing a muzzle device, keep installation torque as low as practical. Too much torque will distort the muzzle and hurt precision. Too little and the muzzle device will work loose

I am fond of the Gamma. In my opinion the hybrid brakes with prongs ahead of open baffles are flash hider wannabes at best. I would rather not have the extra weight and length.http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/t414/ghchhisc/gamma-556_zpsgjlwc2mt.jpg

unless you are self spotting and absolutely have to have as little muzzle movement as possible, stick with the A2. It will kick up less dust and debris. The sound won't be that obnoxious on an 18" barrel if you shoot outside, so I personally wouldn't worry about that, but the dust kick up from the ground with your bipod would be a consideration for me

Stick with the A2, any other option is j6st vanity speaking. They all sure look pretty but they just cost 5 times what the A2 does and can't do what you need it for.

Stick with the a2 as most recommended. That's not gonna be a lightweight rifle so a gamer company isn't needed except for looks.

Another vote for the A2.

Thanks for the replies everyone, ill do some testing this weekend but i think i might just roll with the A2 for a while due to wanting to use a bipod and what not. I know someone in town thats selling a smith Vortex, and a Surefire pro comp for less than half price so i might pick them up to try also even tho i dont really wanna spend any more money. if anything i can throw one of those on my other carbine upper.

I personally like Comps but nothing wrong with A2.

I run several A2s. They do a pretty good job for $10 - $15 bucks.
