And Keef idolized him. Like Ted Nugent said, "if you can't play Chuck Berry's riffs, you can't play rock and roll."

A pioneer. Sad.

It's going to suck in the next few years. I'm a huge classic rock fan. Most of my music idols are in their 70's. Pretty soon they will start dropping like flies. The only one left will be Keith.

He does like hearing something that "really cooks"

I saw him in Chicago in 1978.
Small venue, about 300 people, he put a show on like there were 10,000 of us there.

James Cotton, the legendary blues harp player, died the day before yesterday also. Bad couple days for legends of music.

Definitely looks like he had some serious law breaking issues.

His song "Johnny B. Goode" is one of the 25 or so recordings on the gold records included in the first two Voyager space flights launched 40 years ago and traveling in distant space awaiting discovery. Other examples are songs from obscure cultures. On the Rolling Stones' list of 100 Greatest Guitarists, Chuck Berry ranked number 7. On their list of 100 Greatest Singers, he ranked number 41.

No disrespect intended, but I honestly didn't realize he was still alive.

90 is a pretty good run. As far as the Mann Act, sounds like a Mexican runaway teen who claimed she was "old enough", the truth may vary but there was a lot of that going on, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis come to mind.

In the balance, looks like more good than bad and he left the world a more fun place than he found it. Was never really my sound, but my father did enjoy it.

The Beach Boys copied his riffs to get a career, and all the British invasion bands, including the Beatles, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, and the Stones covered his songs. He was rock, and roll. The music would have been pretty different without him I think.

There was also the armed robbery when he was a teen.

Then there were the cameras he put in the ladies room of his restaurant. I guess he had a poo fetish.

He was a shit heel.

Morbid Thought:

If Chuck Berry was killed by the people he allegedly robbed; would the papers have said "Chuck Berry, aspiring Rock musician, killed in foiled robbery attempt"?

They can't all be Bing Crosby

Armed robbery is never good, I assume he did his time and found a different career trajectory so while I won't excuse it he did seem to get sorted out.

Cameras in the ladies room, yeah that's messed up but I've seen and heard way worse. NFL players do much worse pretty regular. So yeah, definitely had a few screws loose, but still way in the minor league of shit famous people do regularly without any real consequences.

You would think being able to say "Hi I'm Chuck Berry and this is my restaurant" would be all he needed to snag all the tang he wanted so I really don't understand the need for bathroom "perv cams."

Because he was a sick pervert that without fame would have just been known for what he was. A sick, pedophile pervert who happened to be able to play guitar.

Well like I said, I didn't even realize he was still alive, don't know much about him. Also don't have enough invested in this to really care. I think you are probably overstating things a bit, but that's just how it looks to me based upon what little I know about him.

And what Berry invented, those world-changing first songs of his, well, he still uses them himself, for his own reasons. Every month, on this little stage, alongside his son and his daughter, playing late into the night, until the show ends and they turn up the lights, and all that's left is a noise in your ears like a ringing bell.

What a POS.

Chuck Berry was more than a rock icon — he was also a huge pervert

Following two trips to the slammer — first at the height of his fame in the early 1960s for transporting a 14-year-old girl across state lines for sex

But the cops also found a huge stash of pornography, including dozens of videotapes, trays of photographic slides and books — some of which appeared to show underage girls.

The seizure of Berry’s porn collection, however, led to a scandalous 1993 report in the since-defunct Spy magazine that went way beyond the earlier scandals — revealing a penchant for sexual fetishes involving bodily excretions and a predilection for spying on women in bathrooms.

The report also detailed how Berry allegedly installed hidden cameras in the women’s restroom at the Southern Air restaurant in Wentzville after he bought it in 1987. One camera “was evidently behind the toilet seat,” according to Spy, while others captured “aerial views of the toilets’ contents during the seconds after the women stood but before they flushed.”

The recordings were then reportedly “painstakingly” edited and compiled in a pair of “toilet tapes” that showed hundreds of women and girls “in the act of relieving themselves.” “Sometimes the frame is frozen for a few seconds, lingering on moments that must have been considered particularly moving,” Spy reported.

That incident paled in comparison, however, with the case brought later that year, when he was charged with violating the federal Mann Act — also known as the White Slave Traffic Act — which prohibits transporting women across state lines for “prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose.”

The victim in question was a 14-year-old waitress and prostitute whom Berry picked up while traveling in Mexico and brought back to St. Louis to work as a hostess at his Club Bandstand nightclub.

Moose, why do you tell us things we don't want to hear?:sarcastic: Next you'll be repeating the urban myth that Fats Domino hated C. Berry because he(Berry)took a big country s**t on Blueberry Hill. The kids here may not know that "Blueberry Hill" was Fats Domino's best known song. They may not know Fats D either.

About spy cameras in rest rooms. A school superintendent in my region got caught having put same in the female rest room in the central office. I think it ruined his career.

I'm not sure how many Rock Icons are perverts, but I'm pretty sure with the right amount of money and loyal fan base most Men would think of some pretty kinky stuff they would like to do when they were bored and on the road.
The "Shark fishing" from a hotel window members of Led Zeppelin did, Mick Jagger and the "Mars Bar" incident...the list goes on and on.

TMS, I fear that stuff being deposited in others' mouth may be more common than we think. The juvenile facility where I recently--but no longer--worked had many sex offenders. One boy, a serial offender, was charged with using a weapon to force another to open his mouth to receive solid deposits. This kid when he graduated was the valedictorian. Also he was voted most likely to succeed. If he ever shows up on my door step, I would shoot him on sight and take my chances with the law. This guy's preferred behavior is so twisted that his rehabilitation is not possible.. He's also 6'5'' and weighs a trim 290 pounds. I'm not comfortable with our system of capital punishment. That said, this boy is overdue to receive his dose.

Those hooker videos are hilarious! there are a couple but too grainy to tell if it parts of one vid or separate. Anyway, the guy I was working with yesterday is a guitar nut who had Chuck up on a pedestal. For lunch yesterday I played him those videos then we listened streamed some of chucks hits all afternoon. I still can stop laughing at his disappointment!

I didn't know all the weird sex history about Chuck B. I did know that he had been in the pen 2 or 3 times and really don't care if he stole chickens, made whiskey, or even boosted a few cars. So how can I be an apologist for him now? I can say that all the other perverts in his category probably couldn't sing or play the guitar so therefore he.....However, I still would not have dropped my soap around him.
