He was a turncoat sumbitch.

He was going white on the muzzle when I found him, wearing the white cone of shame, in a kennel at the Wichita Humane Society.

I got him to be my boy buddy in a house full of girls. And he was, as long as none of them were home. The minute one of them walked in the back door I was second fiddle.

As I said, he was a turncoat bastid, but he was my dog.

He wasn't a particularly manly dog, pouring water into his pan while he was in his kennel freaked him out and he hated to swim which seemed strange for a mixed lab-chessie, but he was my dog.

He went blind pretty quickly, so I had to help him at the head of the stairs to keep him from walking off, after that he was okay up and down. Something wasn't right though, and his blood count was out of whack, too much white, not enough red. He wouldn't eat his food laced with the red cell builder (race fuel for greyhounds) and he would growl, deep in his throat, tail still wagging, as I used a syringe to feed him.

We'd spent a lot of time together, sometimes with him just sitting next to my chair while I would distractedly pet him. Lately, I'd had to go down to his level, sitting on the floor.

I noticed his tail, while it still wagged, it was a dejected, downward drooping wag. Late last night it came to me he hadn't had any fun for a while, I took him for a last little walk this morning then loaded him in the truck and took him on his last ride to the vet.

We sat on the floor together in the waiting room for a little while, waiting. Then I lifted him up onto the table and talked to him while he went to sleep. I wanted to stop the vet, but couldn't because I knew Jayce needed me to do what was best for him.

On the way home I punched up The Doors:

This is the end, beautiful friend
This is the end, my only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes, again...

Goodbye, Jayce.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. My cat is 16yrs. old and it seems she is on the downturn. Every day I wonder if it is her last. She has been a constant companion and we truly have a bond. I'll be crying like a baby when I bury her.

Getting dusty in here.

My heart goes out to you. They truly are family. We put my partner in crime Murphy down before Thanksgiving. It takes a lot to bring a tear to my eye, but that certainly did. His passing allowed us to rescue another though and thankfully we've ended up with a pooch just as awesome. I know thinking of a new dog doesn't feel right after they're gone, but it helps you, and if you rescue it helps them.

Sorry about your doggy friend.

Dogs can bring about as much sorrow as joy so I cannot bring myself to invest anymore emotionality in owning one again

Getting a dog is setting yourself up for a headache. Our Pomeranian is 15 but she is still pretty spry. If something should happen to her I would have to put my wife in a straitjacket. Im will be a mess for sure.

They are a member of the family without a doubt. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dogs make life worth living. Sadly dogs dying can be one of the hardest things about life.

I have a 14 year old Golden Retriever (one of three of our current Golden). He's doing great right now, but it's only a matter of time. I focus on now, not then.

A dog will give you many of the best days, and one of the worst days, of your life. I can understand how having a dog would be very hard for someone who can only focus on the latter.

I know you feel bad but you did the right thing. You have to remember what you did for the animal not just what it did for you. You offered it a life it may not of had if it hadn't found you.

Damn. So sorry. Chokes me up just thinking about that inevitable day that I'll have to face with my boy Duke. Cherish every moment right?

Sorry for your loss.

We just had to put both of our dogs down a few weeks ago so reading your post brought up some fresh memories I've been trying to get past. The more love we share w/them the harder the end is. Just know that you did right by him & that doesn't always make it the easiest. It's hard now but trust when I say the happy memories will get easier to visit with time. I'm sure my two have already greeted him at the rainbow bridge & shown him all the best places to run or just lay in the sun.

Damn, my allergies are acting up again....

Rest easy Jayce.

Sincerest condolences, my pups are 15 and 13, I enjoy every single day with them, as I never know how much longer they will be around..

So sorry to hear.

Words are inadequate.

Ahh, sucks man. My guy is a 13yr old lab. Just got him 2 years ago.

Not looking foreward to that day.

You gave him a few good last years, and cared enough to put his well being ahead of what's easier on you.

I didn't get all the way through the OP's post and the tears were flowing. We put our 16 year old female Boxer down 4 or 5 months ago and I stayed with her to the end. Like you, as the sedative took effect, I wanted to stop them at the vet but I knew what was best for her in this situation. Her second torn ligament in a year and she was having a hard time with it. She is buried in the back yard with a large rock as a marker over her resting place. I know what you are going through and while you never get over it, you learn to live with all the good memories.

I rescued a Dane with heart worms. Some of you are fortunate to get 15+ years with your friends...

Amen, we lost our 6 year old Dane just before Christmas. We never did know what it was, just started throwing up on Sunday, was gone by Wednesday. We adopted her as a 3 year old, but she made up for the lack of time with us with her sweetness. My condolences to the OP.

A few months ago it was time for me to end my pup's pain. My wife, Ruby, and I went to the vet who gave her the shot while she lay in the truck bed. Every day I think about her along with the other dogs who lived out their lives with us. I was always defensive about my pets. Anna Belle and I got expelled from obedience school when I became enraged at another man who criticized her. With Buster I got mad at the vet when he told me that Buster was spoiled. When my brother said unkind things about Katy, I was deeply offended. When a kennel/boarder owner damned Ruby with faint praise, I made an unkind remark. When Anna Belle's vet said that she was obese, I resented the comment tremendously. She would wake me up at night so we could go to the kitchen for a snack from the refrigerator.
Yes, I understand the pain of losing good friends.

gastric dilatation volvulus (stomach flip). More common in Mastiff and Great danes than any other dog. I nearly lost a Dane to it.

OP, sorry for your loss. My Doberman had to be put down last year. I had much time/money/love invested in him. Broke my heart

Sorry for your loss 26.

I got 2 Malinois pups this time last year and I've cried at least twice over knowing that some day I will have to let them go.

Flyman, homie, not having a dog in my life was far worse than having to let go of a canine companion to me.

Sorry for your loss. Dogs are wonderful gifts to mankind. It's too bad their lives are so short.
