This is for general use, like at a carbine class. Less interested in benchrest or niche shooting, but that might be interesting to read about in the comments. Personally I extend a little on the bench, but while standing I've been playing around with positions 2 and 3. I used to square up to the target with an extended support hand, but since I'm not doing any kind of dynamic shooting I've switched to feet perpendicular to the target and a magwell grip.

Edit: If you utilize a fixed length/M16-style stock I'd be interested in your reasoning behind that as well.

Without body armor on I run mine in position 3, with body armor typically position 2. This gets me a solid nose to charging handle cheek weld.

Position 2 for me. Squared up, support hand near the fsb on the handguard.

Nose to charging handle or as close as possible seem to offer most accuracy for me

Where do you mount your optic? I run a Micro H-2 just short of the handguard.

Irons. I am old school. My eyes are getting worse so optic is going to be something in my future. Don't know when but it is pending. I can still targets at 200 and 300 yards. Minute of man.

If I'm running a stock with no buttpad, it's fully extended. On a stock with a rubber buttpad, in one click from full extension. If I'm shooting under a thick winter jacket, in one more click (position 3). Never more collapsed than that.

FWIW I'm 5'10"

Oh I should qualify. M92 7.62x39 pistol woth cnc warrior folding stock? Super tight lock up. Gieslie trigger Houge grip Bulgarian 4 piece flash hider. Wolf ammo. I hold kak brace with non shooting hand as close to shoulder without touching it. Sand bag rested. This provides stable shooting platform. 60 years of age tri focals. Front sight bury target a blob
If I cam see where my first shots land then I can get on it.

I belive a rifle person should under stand iron sights and how to use them. This way when optics fail you are not out of commission.

Now stock length will be dependent on eye relief of optic.

3 on my SBR with LAW folder.

4 otherwise.

Position 3, doesn't move usually, I don't run armor. If I'm shooting prone for an extended time, then maybe I'll adjust it all the out just for comfort while prone. Position 3 is the most ergonomic for me. I adjust any stock based off of least amount of stress on my wrist if I hold the rifle one handed. I use a BCM grip and a BCM stock. I adjust any magnified optic to the correct eye relief after I figure out my stock length. Not the other way around.

Depending on the stock anywhere from 2 to 4.

For example, my friend's old RRA with a Magpul ACS with the extended buttpad, position 2. That thing was a brick by the way, think it weighed in at about 16 pounds loaded. My only pseudo DMR BCM build with ACS stock with standard butt pad, position 3, same with my BCM gunfighter stock, BCM M4 stock on my old Bushy, position 4. All of these are standing, with nose to CH, and squared to target.

With my current armor set up, I don't find a need to adjust my stocks in while running that, BFG LMAC. Have needed to on other armor set ups though. As well if I am wearing heavy clothing, such as a carhart jacket, I'll drop it in a notch.

On a 4 position tube, 1 click out. On a 6 position, 2 clicks out

I voted position 2, however when wearing armor at work, I prefer it fully retracted.

Position 2 at most, frequently full retract. Not from body armor, but I have some weird upper-torso shape issues where I can't get a proper shoulder alignment, so bearing in mind that I haven't got my AR to live-fire testing yet I usually just handle it the way I would a Thompson or a way-oversized pistol with my arm doing the "Chicken Wing" thing. Short arms, deep ribcage, no pecs... :( Improvise, Adapt, Overcome, right?

EDIT to note: Usual stock is FAB Defense GL-MAG, if I have the MBA recoil pad/rear monopod on it's one click less.

Fully collapsed. It's a convenient (I have nothing to deploy before shouldering the weapon) position for SOPMOD stock with its rubber butt pad and 1.5" eye relief of the 4x32 ACOG.

If I use an Aimpoint, I still keep it collapsed, the SOPMOD stock is long enough, and I love the thing about not having to retract the stock (takes time).

I go to the same length as an A1 fixed stock (because I also have those as well). This keeps my hold and form the same no matter what I pick up.

B5 sopmod on everything. Position 3

B5 bravo, 1 click from fully extended.

Anything closer doesn't give me proper eye relief.

I am to partial to the fixed rifle stocks. On collapsible stocks, one from all the way out.

All the way out, with or without armor. I'm a lanky guy, I'm more comfortable and get a better cheek weld with it.

I have gone with rifle stocks for that reason on a few builds, the Magpul MOE Rifle Stock being my preferred stock when going down that route.

9.5" from the end of the charging handle to the end of the buttstock. I set all mine this way and mark them. FWIW I'm 6'1".

I tried the Pat McNamara style of full out and buried into the shoulder... but I couldn't get squared plates forward the way I prefer.

Wearing even soft armor, I can't run full out, and I have pretty long arms. I don't like being bladed at all.

What if my stocks have 6 positions?

Magpul SL with enhanced butt pad, 2nd position squared up. I have to shoot timed fire, on the move. May collapse all the way with body armour and the new enhanced pad. Support hand all the way out to front sight on my 14.5" URX4. Aimpoint T2 mounted as far forward on upper receiver as possible.

That's basically my setup! KAC 14.5" MOD 2, URX 4, MOE SL stock and Aimpoint H2

Proper length depends on the length of your arms and perceived comfort. The length you choose works best if it works for standing and prone. IMHO

6 pos: 5...maybe 4
4 pos: 3

I actually prefer 4 pos.

Generally position three or four. It depends on what optic I'm using, lpv or red dot.

I normally use position 2. An A1 fixed stock fits me well, A2 is just a hair too long for me.

Sometimes I have to use position 3 on an adjustable stock to keep my nose from getting bumped by the charging handle when shooting .300 BLK supers.

Position 2 for general use, or with gear.
Position 3 if bench shooting.

All the way out, then one click back in (so pos 5 on a 6 pos extension). Worked with a uniform/vest and my long arms.

I used to shoot with position 2. After a class with Pat Mac a couple of years ago I switched to position 4. Now I'm position 4 all the time.
