No, the "Michigan Pistol" is a thing of the past.

You still need to register actual pistols with MSP.

So basically it's still in affect- rifles under 26" collapsed/folded length are still considered "pistols" in Michigan and require registration as pistols. I.e., folding stock AK's etc. So if you have an AMD 65 with pinned muzzle extension that when folded is under 26" in length or a Hungarian AKM underfolder that when folded is under 26" length- will require pistol registration is what I'm reading. Basically Michigan hasn't adopted the Federal guidelines which is a rifle has a barrel of 16" in length and is measured with the stock extended.

It doesn't mention how to measure in the law.

There was an MI AG opinion from back in '85 that essentially says to measure in the shortest operable condition and <26" made it an SBR, which was not legal at the time.

SBRs and suppressors are now legal in MI as long as they are legal federally.

The Feds measure OAL with a folding/collapsing stock in the longest position.

e.x. a 16" barrel folding stock AK does NOT become an SBR just because it falls below 26" folded.

The length number is clear.

Whats ambiguous in the law as written is how to measure in the case of a folded stock.

At any rate, registering a "pistol" is free, easy and fast.

Just drop off the form and you're done.
