I got the book at a Houston gun store for just under $50 back in the early '90s. Hughes was reportedly working on a second edition, but he died in a private plane crash back in the late '90s. The last I heard, his widow was sitting on his collection and research, and asking serious coin for them.

Correction: Hughes died November 30, 1996.

Here is his obituary from the Soaring Society of America:

In his obituary for the International Ammunition Association, Bill Woodin mentioned that Hughes had an odd practice when he was commander of Howard Air Force Base in Panama. He always asked his Airmen to present the magazines of their M16 rifles when he passed by. The troops eventually assumed this was standard procedure and began do it out of habit. The truth was that he was checking to see if any of the cartridges had collectable headstamps. After Hughes was transferred, they continued to repeat this performance for their new commanding officer, resulting in considerable confusion.
