Last week, Glamour published two articles promoting DIY home abortions. Individually, the articles provide dangerous advice. Together, the guidance is toxic.

The first, “A New On-Line Service Aims to Help Women Self-Manage Abortions,” introduced Glamour readers to Women Help Women: “In April the organization launched the first-ever digital information service for medication abortion pills—Self-Managed Abortion: Safe and Supported, or SASS for short—that provides information and resources specifically about obtaining and using mifepristone and misoprostol, which the law usually requires are prescribed by a licensed health care professional.”

The U.S.-based service was, understandably, designed with robust privacy measures. “We learned from the story of Purvi Patel that evidence was taken from phones,” Yanow said. “This will not happen with SASS because there’s no email trail. The answers to her questions aren’t sent to her, but sent to a secure, randomly generated link which disappears in seven days.”

Indeed, having an abortion with pills is medically very safe, but legally risky in the United States. At least 17 women have been arrested for self-managing their own abortions in the last few years alone.

Because of the clandestine nature of self-managed abortion—it happens in a person’s home, not a clinic—it’s difficult to know how many people are seeking this service. One Texas survey found that over 100,000 women may have, at some point, tried to self-manage their own abortion. An earlier study found that women living in 23 states reported trying to self-manage an abortion.

Despite the initial isolation and anxiety that some clients experience, Jelinska shared that for the majority, once they have access to the abortion pill they’re surprised at how easy the process is. “I wish people knew how safe and effective abortion pills are,” she said. “I hope the fact that self-managing an abortion is branded as ‘controversial’ leads to the spread of more accurate information.” She also noted that the organization isn’t advocating for self-managed abortions to replace clinical care, but rather for women to have that option.

I mean really, afterall, what could go wrong?
