View Full Version : Obsession with range brass..

I ve discovered I've got this obsession about range brass laying around.

I generally leave the range with several pounds after every shooting session, Not that many reload around here.

I general tumble everything together then sort later, Hey if cases get stuck together goes in the scrap bin.

If its a caliber I have such as 223 , 40sw or 45 act i'll keep it.

I just realized a large portion of the brass is something i don't have or care to reload.

I just gave away a lot of clean 300 blk, 7mm mag, 9mm and assorted other calibers.

Is this weird or do most members only pick up what they shoot?

I often scoop up everything in my area if nobody wants it. I can either sell it or turn in in for scrap if I don't use it for reloading.

I don't know that I would call it an obsession, at least not in what you are doing OP.

Firstly, when I hit the range, any unwanted brass that is lying around I will generally pick up as I police my own brass. I don't generally look to hard at it, just grab it and in my little bag it goes. Pistol, rifle, all the same. Rimfire sometimes too if I am too lazy to try to throw it away. I sort it when I get home, usually after I have a small bin worth of the junk. Sort, label, and store, clean up, reload, ect. Some may get traded or sold off as time goes by, but it isn't high on my list of to do things as it may have once been.

I used to go to the range, any unwanted brass would get picked up, and if there were any bags of brass in the trash bins I'd grab those too. of course this was when I was getting easily 10 cents a piece of .223 and 9mm brass and 15 cents for 45acp, and .40 brass usually got me about 10 cents too. .308, 30-06, 300blk, if I could get enough of that stuff I could get almost 20 cents a piece for the stuff. I used to go shooting, burn a couple hundred rounds, grab lunch, pick up all brass that was left behind, sell it and come out making money, after ammo, gas, lunch, and my time. That said, I still won't call it an obsession since I didn't ever go down to the range like some for the sole reason of picking up brass, nor did do like others who would gobble up any brass that hit the ground even if it were other shooters who were currently shooting. Now if you left and it was still there... well fair game.

I will say that I know some who are possibly obsessed. I mean guys with 55 gallon drums of casings, multiples, who reload, but not that much, but whenever the opportunity presented itself they would grab casings. Some who have 50K or more, and will still dig through the trash bin for a handful of more even while saying, "I don't know why I am collecting these, I have enough to last me a lifetime now?"

We grab it all.

I grab it if it's brass and cf. I keep a bin for stuff I consider trash that will someday get recycled or sold for scrap.

I keep a bin for common calibers I don't reload, sort it by caliber.

Then I keep bins for stuff I do reload. I don't mix stamps for anything I care about accuracy-wise, so much of it remains unused. Someday I'll sell it all.

I'm guilty.
Been through too many "shortages" to not plan for the worst.

I currently do not reload for 5.56/.223, but shoot factory ammo.

I have ample storage space in the shop for the brass I accumulates.

I pick it up if it's 9, 45, or 223. It's not an obsession and I can quit whenever I want. Hell, I've still got a couple of 5 gal. buckets of brass picked up a couple of years ago.

If it is brass and boxer primed, I grab it. Sort it when I get home and keep the calibers I reload for.

The extra I will either trade off or give away.

I just need copper prices to shoot up so I can sell the brass I don't load.

I too appreciate (semi) precious metal laying on the floor for me to acquire. Brass, gold, silver, I am fond of them all.

Never have done it, but freedom munitions has a brass trade in program. Not sure if they make it worth boxing and shipping, but might be worth it.

None of my ranges allow you to pick up anything that was not fired from your firearm.

Absolutely. I gather just about any kind of metal I find laying around. I either use it, or pile it up to scrap for money later. Hell, I even pick up pennies in parking lots. Just the way that I was raised....pennies make dollars.

I agree .40 is aggravating. I also hate it when a .380 gets thrown in on my 650.

Question, today I picked up a bunch of nickel .308 Federal Champion casings. Are they worth giving to a reloader who loads .308?

I don't but picked them up anyway.

How many of the .308 cases do you have? I may pay you for shipping and a little for your trouble.

Our Range allows you to walk off with the 5 gallon brass buckets, (as long as you bring the empty bucket back)
We also have steel magnets to pull out steel casings...

Lol. I've got buckets of the shit and only own one .40 that has not been shot in literal years. Suppose a Glock or another USP in .40 wouldn't be a bad idea. I don't care, I'll either reload it at some point, sell it, or scrap it. If others don't want to pick it up, that is okay, I will. I pick up pennies too. :) Lol.

I generally only trust the brass that came out of my own rifle for reloading. For scrap purposes I completely support picking up and recycling other people's brass. If I leave brass behind I either lost it or it has seen its 7th firing. After 7 uses, the brass is discarded into appropriate bin. No sense risking a head separation.

It's not enough to matter as if yet but I have a friend that blasts the stuff away. If I get a decent amount I'll let you know.

.380 is a pain also. People and their weird calibers, lol. Recently I picked up just under 50 once fired Hornady 6.5 cases that a guy was shooting from an RPR. Blew my mind. Even when I didn't reload, I saved my brass on the possibility I would. It's set me up pretty good.

Same here on saving the brass before i reloaded. You already paid for the brass. Why throw out 3-7 reloads.

Depending on your load, you can get better than seven. I used to get 12 out of 6.5x47L. Lapua .308 brass often lasts a good 8-10x if you're not trying to push it.

.40S&W is the only pistol caliber that I regularly reload. Happily, the cops around here shoot it, and after they qualify, the range is littered with once-fired nickel brass.

I pitch all the 9 and 45 in the scrap bucket.

We should arrange a 40-45 brass swap

I can get 9mm and 5.56 by the 5 gallon bucket, so I am good on those.

Actually, I'm kind of the opposite of TravelChild... I hardly pick up anything except my own.

My pistol brass lasts forever, and picking up other people's rifle brass makes me nervous... I figure it's the 6th or 10th reload, and they're discarding it for a reason.

Also, I've been shooting 5.56 and 7.62 forever, and saving the brass, so I have plenty, and I like the idea of barely sizing it so it'll barely fit my guns again...

Of course, I do scoop up the cops' nickel cases!

I have come to realize that once a person starts down the path of picking up range brass that person generally cannot hope to be rehabilitated. Reloading in and of itself is a vile obsession, causing one to virtually give up shooting in favor of sitting at a mechanical device and pulling a lever for hours at a time. Instead of improving upon the valuable skills of honing one's trigger control, breathing, and steadiness at the range, one becomes a slave to choosing the right bullets, powders, and whatnot in order to accomplish accuracy from the reloading bench. Truly, an obsession with pornography is not as destructive to society as an obsession with collecting brass and reloading.

I'm kidding. Don't get all upset. :jester:

I can get certain brass cased 9mm for $5.99 / 50 rounds (AIM just had a sale on S&B)

I don't even bother reloading anything but precision rifle loads anymore, and as KrazyKarl said I only trust the brass that came out of my rifle.

Several years ago when I spent a lot of time on ranges (now just shoot on my own property) I would collect all the brass I could find. I had boxes and boxes that I would accumulate and then take to a local shooter's supply store that would give me $2 per box. Even now when I go to a range on the odd occasion it is difficult for me to walk away and leave brass on the floor.

Must resist, mainly once fired 223 , local school can't shoot reloads due to liability reasons, Just from one sat.http://i.imgur.com/gyyHaYV.jpg
currently the 5 gallon range buckets are full of 223 and 308

Pistol bay 5 gallon buckets are full of 9 and 45, someone just bought a 10mm atleast 5 empty boxes in trash with brass on floor
Upper pistol bay is literally carpeted in brass. Private and LEO use..
