Coast Guard: FBI investigating report of dirty bomb in South Carolina

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) - The U.S. Coast Guard is telling WCSC-TV in South Carolina that both state and federal authorities are investigating a potential dirty bomb threat at the Wando Terminal Wednesday night.

According to witnesses on the scene, the terminal was evacuated and agents were seen taping off the ship.

One Coast Guard official told WCSC, "the Maersk Memphis is currently moored at Charleston's Wando terminal which has been evacuated while bomb detection units from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies investigate the threat."

I wonder if this is similar to the case of the guy I heard about who got stopped for setting off Radiation detectors. He had just left the vet and his cat had gotten Chemo...

The linked article above stated:

"Emergency officials report radiation has not been detected as they comb the vessel."

So I'll take that as something else set the bells and whistles off for the USCG.

Probably so. I am just jaded. Most of these threats end up being complete BS. Someone pissed at a co worker or ex.

Lets me honest. Nobody wants there to be a dirty bomb or any kind of bomb on a ship in one of our ports.

Since we're being honest, in a perfect world no one would want such a thing for the US but we're far from that.

I hope this is just a false alarm.

But considering the state of the world, I'm surprised that we haven't faced the real thing by now.

U.S. shipping terminal reopens after 'dirty bomb' threat

A terminal at the Port of Charleston in South Carolina will reopen and the safety zone has been lifted, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Thursday, after investigating a threat of a "dirty bomb" on a container ship.

It said the "original reporting source of the threat" had been detained for questioning.

Law enforcement agents scanned four containers aboard the Maersk Memphis ship in the Wando Terminal after reports of a "potential threat" on Wednesday, the Coast Guard said.

I guess it is not completely uncommon.

According the story I linked in the OP, there was NO radioactive material detected.

The "tip" came from a person who last I read was in custody for questioning.

Possible false report, IMHO.
