I knew better and I bought a POS anyway because I already have a Magpul armorers wrench and figured to only use it once or twice where a closed style would not work. It's not going to cut it. What do you guys recommend for an open or spanner style Castle Nut Wrench?

This is the hunk of crap I got.

I've been using the wrench that comes with KMR rails for the castle nut for years.

^ That. When I sold my KMR I took money off the price so I could keep it and use it as a castle nut wrench.

BCM wrench is what I use. Sturdy, inexpensive, small, simple, and also works on KMR barrel nuts: https://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-KMR-Barrel-Nut-Wrench-p/bcm-kmr-bnw.htm

Thanks everyone, I forgot the KMR wrench doubles as a castle nut wrench. I'm on it.

Out of curiosity why wont the magpul wrench work? I thought it was designed to slip over both rifle and carbine extensions.

It is and does well, but not necessarily with pistol extensions and in the case of a Vltor A5 RE (https://www.vltor.com/shop/accessories-and-parts/re-pa5-vltor-a5-pistol-tube/) there is a raised ring that will not allow a closed designed wrench such as the Magpul or Hammer Head to pass over it to allow access to the castle nut, thus the need for an open style. That KMR wrench is just the ticket and I still can't believe I allowed myself to buy that POS I bought from a LGD, I got in a hurry and didn't think things through. At least it was a cheap booboo.

The Hammerhead is a find tool but is a closed design and will not work, as mentioned above.

You are correct, I may build my last stripped upper into a pistol so might need to know that!

I have used his to assemble about 50 lowers and take on/off twice again as many castle nuts over the last decade. It works, but if you have a bunch of receiver extensions to do every day, I would get something better. The price is right and fits in my tackle box of gun shit very nicely.
