View Full Version : Something interesting with S&W AR upper

So I got some S&W uppers in stock and was going about my normal routine of checking the gas key and such when I noticed an odd stamping above the gas tube hole on the receiver. Generally the M4 stamp (as seen below) is found ONLY on Colt M4's. So I am wondering if there was an over run of stamped M4 uppers and S&W got some of them??

Is it the same size & font, or is it a "me too" kinda thing?

(Not that I mind, it's kinda nifty & very aesthetically pleasing)

Exact same. This upper was meant to be on a Colt.

I'll have to sneak a peek at my COLT. But I don't remember it looking like that.

I'd swear my font is a thinner, roll mark/stampish looking thing. That looks engraved.

On OLD 6920's it had a thinner stamp. On newer Colt's it is fat like this one.

Interesting. What are the specs on these uppers? Do they actually have M4 feedramps? Twist rate?

Disregard! I checked the other thread, 1/9 twist & M4 feedramps.

IIRC, there was a court ruling against Colt for trying to trade mark the term M-4, saying it was not there property at the exclusion of all other manufactures making M-4 type weapons. Could this be S&W exercising the right to mark their barrel M-4?

I got mine back from S&W service about 3 weeks ago where they replaced the upper and it has the same mark. I'm not sure if my original upper had it or not.

My S&W 5.45x39 upper has the M4 marking. I noticed it when I was checking it over, I thought it was a little strange. I'd only heard of Colt's having it, pretty neat.

My complete S&W 15R 5.45 has this M4 mark too.

I have no idea what it means.
