View Full Version : Best source for old gen 3 Smith and Wesson autos?
Two guns I once owned the 3913 and the 4506 both long gone and I regretted trading them ever since.
I'd love to replace them soon but finding good specimens at a decent price is getting harder to do. Anyone know of a good source for these?
Even police trade ins would be ok.
I completely support your desire for a 4506. My first autoloader. Feeds everything. Even those wide mouth CCI snake loads.
Have you contacted aim surplus?
Good luck!
Them and CDNN.
Aim had some 5906's but no .45's
Maybe....

Yes!
Many thanks!
Looks like most of the used SW linked here are out of stock. Damn...
After further review, looks like gunbroker is going to have to be your route
Yeah...
Was hoping to find something from a retailer, but yeah. Looks like GB is it.
If you're not set on exactly those models, Mark has some CHP trade .40 TSWs (4006 and 4013).

I was heavy into 3rd Gen smiths late 90s to around 2008.
Another good source is join the smithwesson forum. Hang out on classified. A lot of good guns show up there. I have been a member there since 2002.
When a goodie pops up, better not hesitate.
Good luck

Most in my area don't like the old S&W 3rd's, Hampton PD carried them for years in 10mm and 45acp, best carry auto I had in the early years was the 1086 on 10mm,

I've been on a bit of a Smith and Wesson 3rd Gen binge lately. It started last month with a really nice 4506 that I purchased in a local gun trading website (texasguntrader.com).
Just after I picked up the 4506, I ran across the 4006TSWs at Summit Gun Broker. I rolled the dice and for $385, I ended up with this gem...

Shortly after the 4006TSW arrived, I realized I really needed a 10mm. I found a nice 1006 on Gunbroker. The Seller stated that he had other 3rd Gen Smith and Wessons that he would be selling. One thing led to another, and we struck a deal for the 1006, a 1076, a 4566, and a 5906.
Normally that would be the end of my binge buying, but I'm waiting on a 5906TSW to arrive. This was also a Gunbroker purchase from a shop that has been listing a number of 5906TSWs. I looked through at least a dozen of their listings before I found one that didn't show signs of heavy use. If my luck holds out, it should be in decent shape.
Good luck in your search.

Is that decock-only? I notice all the photos of those the safety is in the fire position and it made me wonder - I've been debating jumping on one while he still has them. Looks like a very clean example.
I am relying on memory....
Spring-loaded decockers did not have red paint from the factory.
Could it have been installed, I believe only TSW models had the machining to accept the spring loaded decocker assembly
OP, you can also give Calguns a shot. Even though the guns can't be shipped inside CA, they can be shipped out of state for sale.

Another suggestion for Smith and Wesson forums. GB would be the next best.
I had a 4516-1 back in the day as a BUG in my patrol car. Never should have let that one go. Idiot!!

All of the CHiPs guns are decock-only.
CHP guns are denoted by the machined rail and the 'CHP' serial prefix.

I think I found why "finding good specimens at a decent price is getting harder to do." :jester:
