View Full Version : AR A2 fixed stock, carry handle... am I the only one?

I have found myself gravitating back to a more traditional style of AR set up. Mainly, A2 stocks and carry handles. Nostalgia? Maybe. Simple? For sure. Get some looks? You bet... I just feel that a bit of the skill that a rifleman from past generations had is a bit lost today. Ever shot an M1 Garand in military match at 200 yards? Red dots and holographic sights are great, don't get me wrong. Love my Aimpoint micro. Just seems that a bit more practice with a bit less advantages makes sense. When was the last time you looked through the small ring on a fixed carry handled pencil barreled SP1 Colt Sporter? When was the last time you actually shot 300 meters? I am feeling a bit better about my skill set by practicing a bit with less aid... that being said, I won't be giving up my Aimpoint any time soon, or taking my 1-6X scope off my 18" bbl AR either. Do yourself a favor, and try the old irons again. You might just find you're better than you think!

I agree with that. Red dots are fun and are great for speed. But basic marksmanship is gradually falling by the wayside. There is great satisfaction to be had hitting at even 100 yards with iron sights, and it builds great confidence.

Does a carry handle on an S&W Sport 2 count?

I use a A4 removable carry handle (along w/F marked FSB) on my AR15A4 upper. My main lower has a Magpul MOE full length stock on it. I prefer a full length stock over M4 type collapsible stocks even with my carbine uppers. Just so happen to like the Magpul MOE full length stock over the A2 stock.

If you have the area, distance, or eye sight (or combo there of), the iron sighted beasts are rock solid.

No you are not the only one for fixed sights. In fact my Colt is "rocking" the carryhandle sight and a few of my other rifles are just fixed sights, one without F.Assist even. I try to shoot without optics at least every few months. It helps to renforce the basics trigger control sight alinement. In fact I just got some 25m zero targets for just that too. Now on the A2 stock I have one but like the A1 or MagPul better. I have one like "Stickman's" second pic, but A2 lower.

I started shooting Garand matches a couple summers ago. I shot my first Service Rifle match this month. It's quite enjoyable. I have a couple others rifles with cut down carry handles and an A4ish clone. My teenage son occasionally expresses his enjoyment of shooting irons which makes me proud. I still love my scopes and red dots. Variety is the spice of life.

20" fixed stock rifles are my favorite AR platform. I have never been comfortable with the standard issue collapsible stock. I am 46 and have been in the Army since I was 17. I grew up on the M16A1/M16A2 and M16A4 rifles. I have only been using the M4 carbine since 2010 or so. I was taught to shoot 'nose to charging handle' and the standard issue collapsible stocks do not give me as comfortable or consistent of a cheek weld that a fixed stock does. Having said that, I really like the LMT SOPMOD stocks as they give me a very comfortable, consistent cheek weld. If I could only keep one of my AR's, it would be my A4 configuration.

Another 20" A2 lover here, I shoot mine fairly often and still really enjoy it! I also like to drag out my A1 carbine, handy and accurate.

Me, too... Well, the carry handle, at least.

I shoot my Colt 20"A4 with iron sights only and an A2 stock. I am shooting out to 4-600 yds, reactive steel targets. Iron sights slow me down and by the end of my steel time, I am pretty much in the zone...not only with my shots but also physically...slowing down my breathing, laying prone, and keeping my eyes on target destresses me. Really enjoy the simplicity of iron sights, yet the challenge it can bring if I don't do my part.

Most of my guns have carry handles. 1 has an A2 stock.

I had one A2 stock up until a couple days ago. Now I will have three. One older model Bushmaster Dissipator with a A2 stock and a fixed carry handle...love the look. Also got an older Colt Match rifle with an A2 stock and fixed handle as well. Adding these to my restricted rollmark collection.

I am an old school shooter myself. I started shooting back in 1966 at a ripe young age. I had my first encounter with an M16A1 when I joined the Marine Corps in 1978. I have had an affinity for iron sights every since. I certainly have my share of old school ARs and M16 clones. I believe that they are best when it comes to the fundamentals of shooting. Do not get me wrong, optics have a place, but shooting basics are around sight picture and sight alignment. That entails making sure you have the front sight post in proper alignment with the rear sight and having the sights placed on the target in the proper orientation on a target at a given distance. There is more to developing shooting skills that putting a red-dot or cross-hairs on a target. It is a great idea to have an old school AR laying around to keep your skills honed.

I find A2 stocks to be a little longer than I like. I put this together recently (although the barrel profile under the handguard is far too large, I'm planning on replacing it).

Still one of my favorite rifles. I just bought a 20" with a carry handle as a big brother. I am tempted to make it an A4 clone, but may just leave the handle on it for shits and giggles. Or I may stick the handle on the quad rail and put an ACOG on too.

I think the A2 rifle is very aesthetically pleasing.

I never enjoyed shooting them though. I liked the M4 a lot and have been using some sort of carbine since the late '90s.

While some old-school iron sight marksmanship may get lost along the way, we have equipment and technology at our disposal that is quite amazing.

It's good to remember the old ways, but progress is the future.

Not as big of a fan of the fixed stock unless on a 20 inch gun. I do love my a2's though.

20 inch ar15sport a2 upper which was dead on from them. On a zombie defense lower(local sot that had mega make them, I like how my hometown is stamped on it)

Second has a centurion arms 16 inch middy barrel with an asa a2 upper with m4 feedramps. I really enjoy plinking with this.

Third is a colt 727 upper on a spare sw sbr'd lower. The colt lower that goes with that upper is waiting on the form 4 to clear(it even has the 2 position buffer tube still).

Something to say about a nice, light, plinking gun. For anything serious I'd rather have optics. I will say that centurion barrel is very accurate. Almost a shame to use it with irons as I can't shoot that well with them.

Have one Ar15 A2 standard 20" with a fixed carry handle and like it , but if I had to only take one this one wouldn't be it...

Thinking of putting a fized stock on this Dissy I just picked up. My son will be shooting this before I let him use scope or red dot...otherwise he will be firing away with no regard...lol

I plan to build an A1 retro. Once it's finished, I may unload my Sport 2 and just go with extra uppers for different itches.

Message if you need to info on building a M16A1 clone. I have built several of them. I also have a FB group (Down South Retros) where the primary focus in Vietnam era M16s and other retro types of military weapons ranging from WWII to the 1980s.

I'm planning on doing an A2 type build pretty soon because I miss shooting with iron sights. There's just something about irons that I really like. Never should have sold my BCM 14.5" lightweight upper with A2 fsb and carry handle [emoji17]
