Happy birthday to the US Coast Guard!

Celebrating 227 years of saving lives and protecting our shores. Plus a heck of a lot of overseas deployments over the past few decades.

IIRC as of a couple of years ago they had an 18 month waiting backlog to enlist. Small service but obviously selective. Good on them!

Yep, I had several friends that became Gunner's Mates after they left the Marine Corps. They still had a desire to serve, but were ready for a different outfit.

And I know we have some current and former members here. Our own IraqGunz served in both the US Army and the US Coast Guard, I am sure he's not the only one.

If it wasn't for the Coast Guard I wouldn't be here today. My dad proudly served from 1963 to 1967 as a radio man on an Albatross flying out of Port Angeles WA, where he met my mom. He probably would have served longer if it hadn't been for a broken femur in a severe bus accident.
