I want to be able to control my revolver without feeling it smack me in the palm. I thought I could handle hunting loads in my 629 3" Deluxe but wood grips gave me a beat down. After two cylinders of 240 grains I had to take a break. I also want to be able to use hot Buffalo Bore 44 Magnum cartridges. This wood has to go.

I had to switch to Hogue Rubber grips.[emoji23]

How many of you prefer rubber over wood in your large bore revolvers?

Wood for looks and rubber for shooting. I much prefer the hogue on my sp101 then the wood I had for a while. Shooting full power 357s is fun from this little beast.

Looks more comfortable than the factory grips.

When I shot revolvers the first thing I would do is change out the grips for a pair of Hogues. My only revolver left a Ruger Super Single Six is currently wearing a pair.

My .357s and .44 Magnum wear Ahrends Retro Combat grips. They look great, and are very comfortable with full house loads. Their only negative attribute is that they don't have any checkering.

Rubbers may make them a bit more pleasant, but life's too short to use ugly stocks.

My GP 100 has wood/rubber grips that came with it. Mine is 3" .357 and shoots smooth, in fact its fun to shoot. I like rubber with some pistols and wood in others. My Python has original wood grips and they are fine.

My 686 came with Hogue grips. I added a set of Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips and I'm not sure I like it better. I kind of preferred the exposed backstrap. Ultimately I think I would like wood grips or even G10, but I haven't shot full house .357 rounds with hard grips yet. I can say that max loads with 180 gr XTPs and H110 felt fine with the Pachmayr grips. Even one handed was no trouble.

For heavy recoiling loads, do your self a favor and get some Herrett's Jordan Troopers.

My Cougar has a pair of either Hogue or Pachmeyer rubber grips on them that I ground down to the profile of the old Fuzzy Ferrit grips. I love the feel of the grips and before anyone asks for a photo the gun is 1500 miles away from me at the current time.

This. The shape, as opposed to the material of a grip contributes more to recoil control. A long straight grip (especially the front) such as the Jordan Trooper or Ruger Bisley do not give the gun enough of an opportunity to move against the shooters hand.

I shoot anywhere from 25-50 rounds. I do realize the Snubby is spicier but it shouldn't pound my hand like this.

I have Snubbies in 357 and 454 Casull that have rubber that are comfortable, and have the same grips. No issues with pain.

Every time! Not a fan of shooting with wood grips, at least not the stock ones and Im not willing to spend the money on different wood grips to figure out what works. But above all I just don't care to play dress up with guns unless I really really have to

Wood grips would be my choice! Old fashioned I guess...

Exactly. Also, I find rubber grips grip your clothing are not suitable for CCW.

wood looks and feels better unless it was on my 329pd, aka worlds lightest 44mag. miserable to shoot regardless

Rubber on all my revolvers except my Airweight. They're tools - I want the range or woods ones to be comfortable to shoot a lot of rounds or high power rounds respectively.

I want the Airweight to be as small and slick as possible while still being controllable. It wears wood for that reason (and is practiced as such).

I shot my 629 with the Hogues today. Perfect. No issues. Handled the gun, like a champ. Even with fast fire.

With the key term being "to shoot", rubber all the way.

The wood looks 10 times better on my 629 v-comp, but the rubber Hogues handle and feel much better. For my Unobtainium 340PD, I use the CT LG-405s and it really tames the beast.

Best grips EVER for the SP101's are the rubber TRAUSCH grips....you wont find a pair anymore, but they are awesome. When I sold my 3", I kept the grips as they are unobtanium now. Should you ever run across a pair for sale..JUMP ON EM.

I have heard this around the circles when bringing up the SP-101. I was told by someone that they don't even fit the new guns because there was a bit of a change in the frame in the earlier 2000s

I hate the factory SP101 grips. Those look great.

The SP101 was my first gun, ever. I traded it towards another gun. Should have kept it.

Just ordered my first set of wood grips. Made in Thailand, probably out of driftwood..., They looked like a wood copy of the old Uncle Mikes rubber grip, my favorite grip ever and one I can't find. I'll report back when they arrive.

I only have wood in my small bore Magnum, a Kimber K6s. Where it helps is on the draw from the pocket. 0.50 sec from concealment to first shot. The wood is smoother on the draw.

Depends on the revolver and the intended use. If I think my hands are going to be sweaty or wet, then rubber grips are the way to go. Otherwise I prefer wood or micarta.

Report on the wood grips I ordered:
Got these on ebay, they look like a wood copy of the Uncle Mikes rubber, no longer available. I found these unsuitable for shooting my 686. The knuckle of my middle finger is to close to the trigger guard which hurts. That and the grips are not cut for speedloaders. I put them on my .22 M18 because they do look good and I don't use a speedloader with that pistol.

Back to my search...
