Never had a light on a gun before. I'd like to add one to my ar. I'd like to be in that $100ish range. Everything I see when I search is several years old. Doesn't need to be fancy. If the correct answer is "spend more" I won't be butt hurt, but please explain why.

I have been using this light and I think it works better at 1200 in front of your BUIS than an X300U. Whether it is SF quality at less than half the price remains to be seen.

If you are looking for bulletproof reliability for $100 then look for a used SF X300 or Scout Light, although that will even be hard to find.

Otherwise I believe this to be the best lumen and functional bang for the buck for a fun or training rifle!

Dennis.

The surefire G2X tactical is well under $100. Heck, you might be able to get it and an excellent Arisaka ring mount for $100 total, or just over.

This or a TLR-1. They are about $100. With Labor Day sales coming up this project should not be hard to complete.

I use a Olight Baton S1R as my EDC, it replaced a Baton S10R II that had been my EDC since switching from Sunwayman V11R.
Both of the Olights have been reliable and bright. I am anxiously awaiting their new addition to their pistol light line the mini that they showed in their new product release video that aired earlier this month.Hoping it will fit well on a P229R.

Streamlight Rail Mount 2 or HL-X. It's the poor man's SF scout.

I second the HL-X. I have a few scout lights from Surefire, and now I have two of the HL-X lights from streamlight. Both throw and spill is very good for a rifle light. It is versatile in that you can use the 18650s or CR123s, comes with a clicky tailcap or a remote pad with a momentary and constant on option, and hardware to mount to a rail. I have also seen the tape switch attached directly to MLOK slots with a set of bolts and MLOK nuts, although it requires opening up the holes a bit on the switch. for the ~$100 range, I would give it a serious look.

I like the little protac 1L-1aa easy to find a simple mount to put it on the rifle. or take it off and use hand held. it Takes a single AA or a single 123 A battery. 39 bucks on amazon
or the rail mounted one for 99

Just a tip, don't compromise. A low quality piece you'll just replace in the future, or it may fail or underperform. Keep batteries consistent too.

The TLR1 series works, Have used them on long guns, more on pistols. Not ideal in my opinion, especially since most budget lights are going on rifles that are a bit budget-ish so the TLR lights are kind of a pain to mound to anything but a FF tube/rail, though at the 12 o'clock position they aren't bad, just might make aiming irons hard. Also, on the TLR1 rifle kits, had one. Was not impressed. The connector that links the light to the switch came out entirely too easily, think something that is a bit tighter than your average earphone jack. Compared to a Surefire pressure switch which can be a damn pain to pull out.

To me, for about the $100 range a G2X Tactical and mount would be my choice. They work, the G2X is damn durable, I can attest to that, have one which had a bezel that looks like it went through a couple wars. You could also really cheap out on the mount, depending on the handguard, I have seen guys mount when cheap scope rings. I have personally used IWC mounts to mount a G2X to MOE and standard AR handguards. The IWC mounts also have the bonus that I can mount a Scout light, or similar style light should I choose to do so down the road, and you still have a hard use handheld. That is my opinion. Also, If you shop around Scout lights can be had for sub $200, I bought one of my Scouts, and M600C with Larue mount for $125 the other year.

PowerTac from www.powertacusa.com. I have literally melted batteries inside one. Cleaned the contacts with a Q-Tip and denatured alcohol and it worked like a champion. If your prior service you get get a better deal. I paid $99 and that included the light, rail mount, holster, charger, two CR123's and one 18650 battery (rechargeable) AND the tape switch. There's a button on the tail cap which controls the mode, and it remembers which mode you were in last even after you turn ur flashlight off. I have SureFire and also Streamlight, and while I have never melted any batteries (was my own screwup) inside them, I have the PowerTac and it keeps on running.

Here's one I have

Look up "PowerTac Warrior torture test". You'll see what I'm talking about then. I'll just throw the link

Surefire G2X Tactical and IWC side mount on MOE handguards is the setup on some of my rifles. Right at $100, and pretty effective in my limited experience.

I second with krm375's recommendation on the Protac WMLs. They're basically a clone of the SF Scout lights, but they're great lights. My department switched from Inforce WMLs to Streamlight ProTacs for all of their patrol rifles. The nice thing is they are compatible with SF Scout light mounts, same screw patterns.

For budget, I'd also say the TLR-1 HL or Streamlight Protac HLX with Cloud Defensive LCSmk2k. A lot of good reviews coming up about that combo.
